I am planing to acquire a set of extractors for my v8 within next few weeks, but i am not exactly sure how much it would cost to get them installed. At the moment i have a cat back 2 1/2 exhaust with stock cats. So i was thinking to save some money (and maybe improve performance) to just get rid of cats and add a mid-pipe between the extractors and the rest of the exhaust. (i am well aware of pros and cons of doing that, its just i cant afford to spend $150 each per new high flow cat). So the question is basically: does any one know how much aprox. would i be looking at to get the headers and mid pipe installed (if any had that done)? Thanks in advance

You can't afford $150.00 each for new cats???? You are in for a rude shock then when it comes to the cost of fitting extractors. I doubt you'll get any change out of $700.00, unless you know someone. It's a huge job. Not something most people will undertake themselves.

I paid 1k for the installation plus two highflow cats. Well worth it, and it was like Mike said, a HUGE job. Took two days. If you must be cheap you can always re-use your stock cats if they're not stuffed.

Its advisable to check and replace the engine mounts while you are there, saves a of labour cost to not have to do the same thing again down the track.

In case it helps I recently spent almost bang-on NZ$2,000 (approx A$1,600) to have my headers fitted & a 2.25 inch mandrel-bent exhaust system fabricated and fitted. Included central perforated resonator, and two rear mufflers. That was only about $100 more than I was quoted, and the total also included a 5,000km service.

| I fitted extractors to mine two weeks ago. Took about 14 hrs to get the old manifolds out and another 3hrs to get the new ones in. Lots of patience and some really long extension bars reqd but it can be done. I had to put my ramps up on bricks to get the height underneath as the extractors are quite long. Didn't need to remove any mounts or the like though, just remove the cats etc first and most of the bolts are accessed from below. A 14mm ring spanner flattened out was very handy as well as a normal one and an offset one... Plan for a long weekend and a sore back Oh and get the gaskets early as they can take some time... Probably not too useful but here are some pics...

Just for reference to anyone planning to fit their own... I just finished installing mine. On early V8 you will need to remove dipstick tube, as it runs through a bracket on the header, easier done before unbolting header. Get a couple of ratchet style 14mm spanners, 1 fixed, 1 flexible and I also cut the open end of another to slip a 50cm piece of pipe for leverage, no room to grip spanners. I did this in my driveway with just arse end on ramps and front on axle stands. Took me 3 days, probably about 12 hours all up, and all on my own. Most of the time is removing the originals, I reckon about 3 hours putting the extractors on. With a helper and 20 years younger, I cant see that this would take any more than 8 hours, IF you have all the tools you need on hand. The sound is AWESOME

It sounds a fair bit more angry under full throttle. Mine goes into a single high flow 3 inch cat. It's how my exhaust is designed as the cat is used as the the X pipe.

Oleg just get what my system has a highflow 3" cat in the middle. Just buy one cat. It flow much better then keeping the stock cats.

Thread resurrection! I installed my own extractors and exhaust a couple of weeks ago. Everything Dave van Staveren said a few posts ago is good advice, and for anyone else thinking about doing it yourself, here's my two bob: 1. Installing the extractors isn't the hard part. Removing the stock manifolds will be where almost all of the swearing will happen! 2. A crappy old drop forged 14mm ring spanner will be your best friend for loosening off the nuts that hold the manifolds on. Cut the open end off, and get yourself a length of 10NB pipe about 500 - 600 long. This should only cost you a few bucks from your local steel retailer. 3. My original cats wouldn't come free, no matter what I tried. The driver's side manifold removal procedure requires you to rotate it around as you pull it out from underneath the car, since the steering shaft is in the way. The cat prevented me from rotating the manifold enough to drop it out. To combat this, I undid the engine mounts and jacked the engine up a few inches. This turned "impossible" into "dead easy". 4. Buy yourself a can of high quality penetrating oil, and a couple of hours before you start working, pop some on the manifold nuts to penetrate the threads. If you've got a 1991 UZZ31 like me, those nuts have been sitting there, untouched, for 23 years. 5. If you start to undo the bolt, instead of the nut, go with it. You will need to go and buy a set of E-torx sockets to put the bolt back into the engine block. You will be grumpy about having to buy an entire set of sockets so you can use one of them for 5 minutes, but in ten years' time you'll need one of them and you'll be patting yourself on the back for being smart ten years ago! 6. There will be times when you think it's blatantly impossible, and that there's no fornicating way you're going to get the job done. WRONG! I did it, and many others have done it before me. Take your time, do it in 3 - 4 hour stints over a few days, and look after your back. Provided you have all the tools ready to go, removal of the stock manifolds shouldn't take you more than 12 hours all up. The extractors and exhaust took me about 2 hours to install... somebody else said that once that stock stuff is out, you're on easy street - it's true. Most of all, try to stay calm. By the time I was done, I was almost ready to throw the car in a skip bin and walk away, but then I fired it up... when you hear the difference the extractors make, the whole ordeal becomes well worth it. Good luck!

Changing engine mounts with 4 into 2 extractors once fitted is really hard ,would be a good time to fit new engine mounts when old extractors are out of the way .

I got mine done and also engine mounts. Radiator top tank split. Be careful when you jack the engine up the top hose will pull on the radiator.

Yeah, I had my engine mounts changed, but not when the extractors were put in. I replied to this thread in 2010 and my old man has my V8 Soarer now, and I've got my vvt-i turbo. I swapped cars today and took the V8 to work. It's still going strong and the extractors are doing their job well.

Yeah, I should have mentioned the radiator hose. I was mindful of this when I jacked the engine up. I think I'm going to have to get my car tuned... it's slower off the mark than it used to be, but when you get to 3000, BANG!!! The power delivery is explosive! I gave it a little squirt in a straight line, and when the gearbox kicked down into 1st, the tyres chirped and the car stepped out to the left a little. It's never done that before! Me likey!

Hi all, after reading this I am thinking I would get my electric drill and drill holes in the cast iron manifold at each port until I could brake them in half. cast iron is soft easy to brake up.grease on drill catches dust. easy to get at nuts easy to get manifold out. What do you think?
