Okay, so lets say there was the option of one of these two cars. Which would you choose..?
1996 white soarer single turbo vvti auto 112,000 KMs New white paint job DVD player electric seats/cruise control new intercooler sunroof brown interior (which i highly dislike) lowered nice 17" wheels though not sure what kind tint
1997 black soarer vvti single turbo auto paint faded and old with minor surface scratches (how much for a respray by the way?) electric seats/cruise control no sunroof very clean black interior not lowered but high and will need lowering for sure stock wheels
Im leaning toward the white one, but black interior is so much hotter than brown.

Doesn't it come down to personal choice? People can tell you what THEY would prefer, but in the end the choice is yours. If you are after someone to run your life for you, then listen to what others tell you. Have a thorough check on both. Whichever comes out on top might sway you.

get it looked at by a paint restoration place. For a thousand bucks it may look like it has been resprayed. They can work minor miracles.
What are the ks on the black one? It is less likely to have been thrashed being unmodified.
If the white one has the modifications you want, then you always get them on a car at a fraction of the price of buying them all new. There are black interiors that come up from time to time. They aren't that hard to change over.

After dealing with a lot of different painters over the years a respray on a black car is way too much like hard work. And after owning a couple of black cars unless you want to wash it twice a week forget it. I hate brown trim too but the one in mine grew on me after a while plus brown spare parts are a lot easier to find then black. It sounds like someone has done most of the work on the white one and that would probably be the way I would go but its hard to say without seeing and driving both cars. I would rather a car that drives well than looks pretty and given the choice of 5 different cars in various condition and different options I would always pick what drove the best and I felt most comfortable in. At the end of the day its always a matter of personal choice though

White is such a boring colour for a sports car though. They never look shiny and exciting - they are always just white no matter how much work you put into polishing and waxing them (OK, so maybe I'm a bit of a magpie...)

Matthew, before a week ago i would completely agree. I've always thought white was dull and boring on soarers but this one was one of the shiniest and cleanest looking things i''ve seen. It was a real eye catcher! wish i had some photos

Definitely would go with the black. Have some proper tint installed to cut out the cabin heat, and then budget to get it resprayed and lowered. When it comes time to respray I would probably choose to paint a metallic dark blue, or maybe metallic silver.
Certainly one of the easier decisions I have had to make with Soarers!

They are the same price. I took a few mates (soarer fans) with me for the test drive. They all weren't keen on a white one until they saw this one. Looks amazing! So I've decided to get it in exchange for the white one
Makes more sense now. I've seen this in the flesh, looks nice very nice. Not sure which black one you're referring to though. But the owner of that car was one of the mechanics at Luxury and Performance.

Haha Ken, u just hit the jackpot. Yes, that's the car but I didn't want to show those pics because they don't do the car justice. Not even a little bit! And yer, I've realized the black one isn't advertised I dont know why though. Deffintely a beauty but the white one just blew us away when we saw it in person. However, I will post some nicer pics when I get it this friday

Hays, I remember going and seeing Frank working on a black vvti last year, could that be the car thats now for sale? As I remember the paint was rather scratched.

Honestly, just got over the v8. I'll miss her dearly but we had a good run together, was time for a change. I'll post some pics of the new beast when I get her in

DUDE THE WHITE SOARER LOOKS WRANK.
no offence.
get this car freighted to you in victoria - or fly up there inspect it and drive it back.. these two cars are the same price and it's like comparing chalk and cheese. that's for sale from a dealer and i can guarantee you they're making about 4 grand off that from importation.
PLEASE LOOK AT THIS ONE - i wanted this soarer for myself it was 19K a few weeks ago and now it's 12.9K

you might think im crazy, but i prefer the one i chose. Trust me and Ken could tell you, its much nicer in person than it is in those photos. Besides, with the sunroof and extra options in the one i got, not to mention the price of getting that one from state to state and having it registered and the road worthy just isnt worth it. Another thing, its too late Already done all the paper work for the other one, I pick it up tomorrow. But thanks for trying, that one is still definitely a keeper. I plan a manual conversion anyway, a 6 speed hopefully. And as for the interior, have you seen Mile Verrinders? Exactly what i want (Though still too scared to try something like that)

holy santa claus SH1T that is a nice tan black combo!!! like - seriously i've seen the US guys do tanblack but that is SOOOO on point!!!
even the black gloss woodgrain bits are PERFECTION!!!
man - that's a really nice job he's done... (i say HE because i know that there's no way a girl could do that - they're just not smart enough! :p )
anyway - back on topic - personally i would definitely take the white out of the black / white options...
yes black is nicer colour bla bla bla but in all honesty the white soarer is just SUCH a nicer car...
obviously you've already bought the white one and i just saw the OTHER pictures of it and i can definitely see why you picked it - it's actually a REALLY nice car...
i thinki just hated it from the "first" pic they had - (funny how a pic taken with overcast weather with a dirty shed in the background and having the car sitting in a pool of beige MUD makes it look sh1tty haha)
but yes - that white car is definitely nice...
as for the kilometres, they sound about on point but just make sure that the dealer surrenders ALL documentation to you from import... this means shaken docs and auction sheet - there's a high chance the KM can be wound back, a lot of dealers do this - it's not the end of the world, it's just that if you know the GENUINE km from japan then it helps you understand what the service schedule is!
ie: if you're driving the car thinking it's a 106km car when it's actually a 250Km car then you won't know when to replace the water pump etc...
when i was shopping around for soarer i found a MINT RSP Lpackage with 98km showing. a quick phonecall showed me the car had done 212xxxkm... needless to say i backed out of the sale..
i have two 97 soarers now and they're both on 104 genuine so japanese driving >120km is about right though but it's best that you confirm it for your own piece of mind make sense?
and - another thing - being that you bought this car from a dealer i must say you got a pretty good price - to put it bluntly - i like your car, haha

haha darren shaken is pronounced "sha-Ken"
and i don't know what it's direct translation means...
but shaken is a ... hmm... think department of transport - but a lot more efficient..
they marry the VIN number with the cars ODO reading, it's service history, it's emissions etc and send the owner on their way...
it's just so that the Jap gov't can keep tabs on which car has done how many KM and what servicing it's had in that year..
to them - it means statistics and record keeping... to us australians buying from dealers - it means that we can see whether or not the 17 year old R33 skyline with 42,000km is actually in need of a full engine rebuild =P

Oh okay, I actually understand quite a bit about the Japanese road laws & system etc, cars get taken off the road and then sent overseas where we buy them as nice low km 1 owner cars! But the context you used it implied everyone knew what it was, luckily I knew but never knew what it was called. Can't wait to go again and visit the 'wrecking' yards with their 'wrecked' cars, that have one panel damaged and thats it...

And about the interstate, well firstly I know nothing about compliancing, except for what they usually do as routine, but I bought my car coz the ad had the plate clearly shown which is something you often need to ask to see. First car I was lucky that it drove back from QLD, no probs with permits or reg across 3 states, but the petrol was a big shock. That car made it easy and then went on to 425K. Luckily I had the QLD reg transfer paper from the seller, got the RWC, and then paid the reg & stamp & transfer at VicRoads and all was well. Next car came with no papers, on a truck, was not driveable from NSW, needed heaps for RWC, 1 key, vague alarm, VicRoads inspection appointment for VIN etc, now all Regd but still needs turbos (so guzzles the juice).

wow.
i don't get NAY of that haha
wrecking yards - never heard of such a thing? but makes sense - basically the dealers in J are very big on the whole "your car has almost done 100xxxks you need to upgrade and trade in" absolutely RAPE the customer on their trade in then shove their car through USS auctions and make more money again haha
in japan many people are tricked into beleiving that 100K's means their car is about to literally blow up at any minute and their insurance won't cover it etc
so to convince them that their car is wrecked over one damaged panel isn't that big of a stretch for them :p

Not sure if its a 'blow up' situation but cars are expensive to maintain, have to be checked regularly, and their climate is harsher than ours. I saw wreckers where cars were piled on top of each other and were in a much better state than our wrecks. I've heard trade-in value is far better than ours too.

I guess they have high salaries, cars are cheap, and they don't have much else to spend their money on (most people can't afford to own their own house for example as land is so expensive, so most are not mortgaged to the hilt like we are in this part of the world)
Speaking of high salaries, they have just released a report in NZ that shows that the average Aussie earns over $400 a week more than the average Kiwi! Supposedly the average Aussie earns something like $1200 a week - nearly $1500 when you convert to Kiwi money. Its a wonder you lot aren't driving around in Bentlies instead of old Soarers huh?

madmatt... i don't think you understand our tax system...
allow me to give you an idea...
imagine MAKING it in life.. like REALLY making it - you hit the big leagues.
sucks to be you. because after tax... you probably don't make that much more money than my mate's ex wife. who's a 24 year old never been employed woman who milks my mate for two kids (one isn't even his) from his high paying electricians wage.
THEN claims everything from welfare.
she's literally the only person i know that is unemployed and makes 73K a year.
so - in australia, you can be a complete success story. you can make about 120Kpa and earn the same amount after tax as my mate's exwife.
apply that similar process to aust cars. we have luxury car surcharge for cars that aren't even luxury.

Yeah, its kinda the same here, but we have had some reform recently - so our top tax rate is being reduced by 5% in October, after already being reduced and adjusted to a higher income level last year, so things are improving.
Of course we then get stuffed by GST, which is both higher and further reaching than in Aus, but at least thats a consumer pays tax, so you can chose to save.

I mentioned about trade-in value, I wasn't referring to a Soarer of specific age, its for a 3-4 year old car that the dealer would like you to upgrade from. And the car is their biggest expenditure in life (like Madmatt said). But I have a friend with an 80s Nissan Bluebird in mint condition that he has to maintain to mint condition!
