I live on Burwood hwy and am pretty sure I saw this car last night (was driving my soarer home) ... I travelled a few K's with the other car along spingvale road.
If was just too wet to try anything although the other car wanted a go.

It was Chinese Students wasn't it? I saw it on the news about twenty minutes ago and was pretty shocked he must of been driving ridiculously fast to do the damage he did to that soarer. The Pole almost tore the car in half and it looks like the gear box is next to the drivers seat.

Any car hitting a pole from that direction would be nearly split in half, due to wet grass it would be unlikely you could wash off much speed and was probably travelling at close to impact speed before things went wrong.
100km/hr on a 80km/hr road which in many locations is as good as if not better than a FWY rated for 110km/hr speeds. Still illegal but not so bad that this speed is the only cause of this accident.
Whilst this was probably made worse by speeding and the wet conditions I think there is more too this than meets the eye. The other car also had some form of damage.
Probably a crash between the two cars, perhaps a slight touch when the soarer was changing lanes in front of the civic?

I know this area like the back of my hand and the weather was really really bad at the time ... short of it is these people decided drag (or drive dangerously) in a storm. They would have had TRC off as well and boy are the roads slippery.

Hate to say it, but street racing - in the rain no less = Darwin award candidate. At least they didn't kill anyone else. Can't really feel that sorry for the guy. Feel bad for his family though, especially as they might not even know yet! (and of course feel bad for the car)
