Are you after performance mods or cosmetic mods? Not much more you can do performance wise on the cheap other than the BFI. But other cheap mods worth doing are removal of the reverse beeper and door chime.

Could replace the caps in the ECU. It may not give the same performance gain as you would see in a TT, but you MIGHT gain a bit of power and a bit of fuel economy.

Same value, the capacitors when they get old tend to leak and not function properly. Thus performance and fuel economy may be effected. As for the exhaust, i would highly recommend starting from the headers or even better, doing it all at once. If you do a cat back exhaust it will need to be modified to fit the headers, same deal with the current exhaust. Headers do give better performance but they also change the sound as the engine is breathing easier. Mufflers will also give a performance boost, less restrictive air flow = more performance. So to answer the question both give performance and sound upgrades.

Thats right, All the small worthwhile mods are already standard on our hi tech V8s. Not much more to improve on
Massive potential with the v8s guys so you shouldn't knock them.
Cameron, to get back on topic no n/a car can make big power increases without either a lot of work or a lot of money spent on it. Do what I said and get a tt diff which will help you get off the line quicker, other than that your only option for a good dollar/horsepower ratio is NOS but that can't be used on the street.
