I am getting from 8 to 10 klms per litre of fuel but according to my EMV and that seems about right but when I fill up I am only getting about 3.9 klms per litre!!! There is a fuel smell sometimes so I went looking on the threads and there was a fix for leaking rubber joiner in the vent line, it meant just puting clamps on the ends of the joiner piece but I don't have a joiner piece, just steel pipe from the top of the tank to the main fill pipe. There doesn't seem to be a fuel smell inside the car of the inside the boot but there is one when I get out of the car near the filler cap. I noticed that there was a post on sealing the reducer in the tank fill but I don't have a reducer, just a big old fashioned type hole like before unleaded fuel came in the market. How do I test my petrol cap and how do I get a good one, preferably one that locks. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks John

This might sound silly but do you know if you have the correct fuel cap? Also when removing the cap to refill do you get a hissing noise? Pressure releasing. Did you check if the breather hoses are ok? I'll have a look around my fuel tank too and see if can help.

I do not know if I have the right fuel cap or not but expected to hear more hissing when I remover my fuel cap, especially when it is empty. I don't remember hearing that sucking sound that I am familiar with on other cars. How do I know if it is the right cap and will a cap off another more common car fit, say a commodore or a Ford? Thanks for taking an interest, with fuel at the price it is and me trying everything to get better economy it is a bit disconcerting when you get 3.8 klms per litre with careful driving, mostly Cheers JOhn

if it is correct you are only getting 3.9kms/L you are loosing half the petrol from the tank.(ie 35L per tank) that will not happen thru the fuel cap and any leak of that size should be obvious.

john,
you say the emv is saying you are getting 8-10 kms/L. if you were loosing fuel thru a leak, this should be reflected in the EMV in the KMS left in tank. Also what is the fuel gauge doing? You should get ~150kms per quarter tank. Also is the odometer reading correctly? At 4kms/L you are getting less than 300kms to a tank

The EMV just stopped working so can't test until it is fixed now but I recorded about 200 klms since last fill and had to put in 50 litres and nearly fell over. I did not take note of the kilos left in tank as my EMV screen has been very hard to read when there is any sun around. I have found this says about 450 usually when I fill up. This agrees with the lowest of readings for around town with 6 klms per litre whereas I get up around the 10 or 11 on the highway. The thing is very soon after I have filled up the kilos in the tank falls to below 400 klms. Terrible hey. Need to find another cap and see what happens.

have you checked that the odometer is correct? IE 100kms on the odometer is really a 100kms travelled. check it over a known distance. I cannot see how 35L can escape past the petrol cap and not be obvious.

Speedo seem correct so odometer should be correct, yes the distance that I just travelled on "Where Is" is the same as my odometer showed, within a kilo on a 38 klm run, so that is fine.

Yes, just replaced fuel filter and cleaned fuel sensor in tank and no leaks anywhere there that I can see, no smells anywhere except around the fuel filler hole either.

Thought i would borrow this post ..Hmm , I have a really bad fuel smell in the cabin after 10 minutes driving . Have done the Fuel Filler fix and also have correct cap fitted , Does anyone have any other ideas ?

pull the trim of in the boot and check the tank. i had my fuel pump upgraded to a walbro 500hp and had a strong smell after it. found it to be the screws were not done up tight enough.

John, your economy won't be your fuel smell, that would be be minor loss at best, otherwise it would absolutely stink. if it is only outside the car, around the cap. Then it will be leaking between the restrictor and the filler neck. Remove, clean and replace with sikaflex sealant.
Daniel, check you boot seal number one, fuel smell can draw through here, especially with windows down. Number two, check wells in boot on each side. Theres big plastic box's, with plastic flaps, pressure equaliser. Check these to make sure they are sealing or not damaged, as fuel vapour can draw back through here, basically unburnt from exhaust. Number three, tank access point behind seat where you access fuel pump.

Ok Brett, then if the fuel loss is not the problem (I don't have a restrictor so can't be that) what is it? Car runs well and I know how to drive for economy but the consumption is not up to scratch. Just got 9.3 klms per liter driving down to surfers last night with no traffic from Caboolture and super light throttle, easiest run possible. Should be better than 10 surely when running on Shell 98. I have BFI too. So now I need someone who knows how to do the capacitor overhaul in the ECU I suppose? Is there anyone who can assist? Will be pleased to hear from someone who has experience with this. Thanks John

So around 10.75 litres per 100km, Ive seen worse, start checking hardware. Are your plugs black ? O2 sensors ? leads ? coils, all these can contribute, leaking caps in ecu, Cats blocked ? hows your power ?
John you still have a restrictor, Its just bigger and fitted from factory in Japan, So I would still be checking that for the smell.

brett maybe on to something. im guessing the temperature up in qld is quite hot maybe humid? what can happen on a hot day when your petrol tank is full is it can overflow. due the petrol stored in the tanks underground at the local servo the temperature is alot cooler. when you fill your car up and it sits in the sun on a hot day, this can cause the petrol to expand and overflow out the filler hole. this can also be caused by the filter that allows the pressure to equalize being blocked.
