Why did you sell and what did you buy instead?

A few reasons but mainly cos I wanted something ideal for towing and more practical, so for now I've got an old Ford Fairmont v8.

Depending on how "old" the Fairmont is, its debatable as to how much more practical it could be for towing or for anything else.

Lets see....4 doors, big boot, back seats fold down (no fuel tank in the way), decent ground clearance, seats not designed for a 5ft tall Japanese businessman (I am 6' 4"). Sounds practical to me.

It's a 1991 model btw, first of the 5.0 EFI Falcons!

I'm 6'3" and never been more comfortable in a car (soarer). At least the seats move right back! Good luck with the new beast:-)

Breaks down more often (though its cheaper and easier to fix I guess), uses more fuel, produces both less power and less torque (but lower in the rev range, so debatable that it might be better for towing), might have 5 seats but is a death trap for passengers in an accident due to total lack of safety features - all depends on how you measure it I guess.

The Soarer was designed in America for Americans.

Jeez you can't seem to let this one go Matt.

Parts are cheap, 10.5-11l/100km for the Soarer vs 12.5l for the Falc (don't have to run it on 98 RON so costs about the same), less power but more torque especially low down (how often do you drive at full throttle anyway?). As for poor reliability, well that's debatable. Look after your car and it will look after you - you only have to go on eBay and see all the neglected, condition Soarer's floating around, then come on SC and see the (mostly) well maintained, reliable cars that people have looked after and loved. Same goes for Falcons, Commodores, etc.
Safety wise the Soarer would probably ace the Falc, but the temptation to go fast was much greater in the Soarer

Don't get me wrong- I love Soarers, they're very very good cars - but they're not the be all and end all that some people make them out to be. The Falcon is a cheap, totally different type of car to suit a different purpose.

Fair enough. To be honest a late model Falcon (Most likely an 2006+ XR6 or even newer G6E if I have a really good year) is on my list of possible upgrades for next year - but the continuing climb in petrol prices is making me think about something smaller.

Well we'll see, the wife wants to do a whole load of work on the house, so likely I'll still be sitting here this time next year, 7 years gone with the Soarer and an empty bank account - but with a really nice deck and pool...
