with the current low price of set top boxes for digital TV, has anyone thought of putting one into a soarer hooked up to the AV inputs to the EMV?

it would be a simple exercise to modify the box to run from 12v.

"TV while driving = certain doom"

Any ideas out of the ordinary = "certain doom"

Just because you might not want it, why flame others?

Seriously getting over the negativity on this forum.

Its illegal Matt, Unless you wire it up to switch the handbrake, its defectable.

Its not negative its the LAW.

And yes you WILL have a crash if you watch TV while your driving.
And that wasnt "flaming".

Sorry, I didn't see where he said "to use while driving". Must of missed that part of the post.

I am fully aware of the legalities of this. Comes with doing it for a living. And yes, you are right, it needs to be hooked up to a handbrake. Just don't think that was the answer Tom was looking for.

Glad to see that the spirit of helping fellow enthusiasts is alive and well on this forum.

Ignoring the negative comments...

Yes Tom, it's not a bad idea. Like you said, getting a STB to run of 12V wouldn't be too hard. Worst case - Use a cokecan inveter.

I think the hardest part would be getting a good reception...

The hardest part is not getting good reception.. Getting good reception will be EASY compared to how hard it will be to get something on tv worthwhile watching!!!!! Amirite guys?

How do you get the EMV to switch to the digital tuner though, which button do you use?

And as for channel up/down volume how does that go?
And integrating the audio from the STB/Tuner into the factory audio or aftermarket amp/system ?

you would plug into the existing AV connectors.

Currently these are used for the NTSC tuner that is in the car.

further to previous post, this unit would also pick up all FM stations, no need for expanders.

I have one hooked up to my EMV.
Didn't do it to get Free to air, Hooked up a 500gb HDD to play my MP3's while driving and watch movies when i'm waiting to go into work.

Boris, to get it to switch to the tuner you just hit the TV button. Well if you have wired it into the original analog TV loom :-)

Tom, it only picks ABC DIG JAZZ+SBS radio, so hang on to your expanders, a far better unit is this one

If you get an NTSC output one its easy to add a video / audio rca input to your EMV. I have been doing this mod to the EMV tuners for years.

hi dave, christian,

what do you think about this

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SCART-DIGITAL-TV-DVB-T-HDTV-TERRESTRIAL-TUNER-RECEIVER-/190386079715?pt=AU_La ptop_Accessories&hash=item2c53e507e3#ht_3365wt_952

am I correct in assuming this could replace the existing TV unit in a straight swap.

No Christian, as it does not tell you the output NTSC/PAL... needs to be NTSC output, 2 its 5volt input 3 you would have to go from the scart output into RCA lead to connect it, and for that price i dont thing it would be happy with the end result.

thks dave,
on the specs it states "auto ntsc/pal conversion.

I am not familar with the DVB-T standard. When they state ntsc/pal,arent they meaning output?
IE: is an ntsc output DVB-T tuner all that is required?

12v to 5v is not a big issue.(phone charger, commercial 12v to 5v convertor, or build yourself with LM7805)

I have an adaptor that takes scart to RCA from previous foxtel setup

what models would you recommend for a good easy conversion?

Hi Dave,
what i liked about the above was the remote can be connected by cable to the unit, allowing it to be mounted in place of the original.

Tom this is the one i now have
Upload
have a look at it on ebay ,comes with remote extender cable ,so you can fit the tuner under the rear seat and run the IR eye close to the EMV screen (just point the remote at the screen)..it works well .
Daniels is by far a better one with twin tuners

hi dave, found the one you have, ~$110.

do you use the MP3 usb function to play audio?

is it a simple menu that comes up on the screen to allow you to select songs?

it does look like a good unit having the TV as well as the MP3

there are many of the TV only "scart" units for ~ $20, but they do not have the MP3 function.
