Hey all was just wondering what would be involved in swapping a 2jz N/A (96 engine) to 2jz N/A VVTi (98) engine as i have decided not to go turbo at this time and can source an engine for under 500 bucks.
Are they significant advantages in fuel and power or reliability?

If you are doing it yourself... maybe. If you are paying someone to do it, not worth it.
Also depends on your current engine, is it stuffed? If not, save your money.
You will have to modify your harness, which unless you know what you are looking for, would be a PITA. Not sure about the transmission wiring, but should be similar.

From what I've heard from the Americans is.. Power and torque is barely noticable... And economy is not much different either... But they all say it's different and drives better regardless... But it's hardly an engine I'd swap into a soarer :/
My advice is never buy an engine because it's cheap. Because you'll end up buying another in about a months time...

You need the whole wiring harness complete with ECU and sensors to be able to do the swap . Also the transmission might be different as well . I am guessing the Exhuast wont bolt up to the head possibly ?>

For what it's worth, you may as well just upgrade the cams. Like Daniel says the electrics are the main hurdle... so for such a tiny gain your better off to stick with your perfectly fine non VVTi 2JZGE
To get some more go, you could put the nicer headers on it from a 2JZ VVTi, few HP and increased response there.
