Although I love my V8 and am thinking about buying a particular 2.5 litre if it comes on the market, I can't help but eye off the FT-86 which may be marketed here in 2012. (Possibly priced from 35k according to an article in todays Herald-Sun) Will the FT-86 erode our affection for the Soarer?

I would consider it, but one of my worries is where the engine will be mounted, Subaru's generally have the engine mounted well in front of the wheels.

its a boxer engine, wont exactly be "pissy" lol. plus subaru is ment to have a turbo version and scion in the us might also have a turbo one. no news on if toyota will have a turbo one or not.

Re FT-86 engine size - Could this turn out to be one of these scenarios where the 1st model comes with a small engine and they upgrade by a couple of 100 cc for each model which follows? I bought a new early model Tarago with 1800cc many years ago. Then they went to 2 ltr then 2200 cc and I think they finished at 2400cc. Wouldn't that be disappointing for one of these?

Toyota is capitalising on their partnership with Subaru and the development of a new mid sized sports car platform to renew a badge that made them money in the past.
The whole thing is a massive compromise from the get-go and on top of that, everybody wants something different from it.
86's gained their popularity by being cheap but disproportionably capable thrash boxs. How do you sell brand new cars to ppl under that concept?
I think Toyota would have went far with continuing with the Supra look, something like the LFA but styled to look less like a transformer and more of a car.

was built to replace the celica in the original designs not the supra
as soon as someone will buy the car they will have to replace the "fine china" pistons, "pumice" style gaskets, "rubber band" belts, "super ruff" exhaust note.
$6K factory option replace the engine with a vvti 3sgte

Bring out a turbo model and then I'll consider it a return to their old. They don't make cars like gt4 3s-gte anymore and I don't think this will get there either. I'm a Toyota nut believe me I've only ever owned Toyotas etc etc. BUT I wouldn't buy a brand new Toyota. The Aurion doesn't impress me, even the TRD supercharged FWD. WTF. If they were RWD or AWD with manual box I'd probably already own one.

if you guys are so gung ho about being toyota purists then why won't you guys accept that toyota know what they're doing with this project.
toyota are willing to admit that "hey this isn't really our thing any more" so they're leaving it to the best in the biz to lay the ground work for them..
Subaru are supplying the base model of the motor. and Yamaha are tuning the absolute sh1t out of the head.
why would you say it's a pissy little engine? asl a SSS Pulsar owner how they feel about their cars.. and they'll be quick to tell you that the SR20de IS a pissy engine.. but in their light little cars makes for an exciting drive.
same with AE111 trueno owners..
imagine that layout - with yamahas head technology and their throttle response and their balls out torque capabilities... imagine that heart in a RWD platform.
this will be like the nissan 180sx except it won't suck. and it won't need to rely on a turbo to make it's power.
i also don't understand why everyone is crying about there being no turbo... the AE86 never had a turbo. so why should this?
the AE86 used 20v setups. independent throttle bodies and bored out cylinders and motorbike carbs and all sorts of oldschool mods to make their power.
as for "will it replace my love for soarer"
no.. not for me. but i have a big heart and am willing to let another into my wolfpack. =)

Never thought i'd say it, but +1 to rowan
Not everything needs a turbo and a bazillion RWHP to make it fun, if its light and nimble a revvy N\A is plenty, and since this is being based on the AE86, only good things can come from it.
Turbo is cool...but i'd take a light/nimble car with a ported 12a with a weber or a 4age 20v with quad throttles over a heavy turbo car any day.

Scott... did you not read anything at all ever ever?
...ever?? haha
subaru are not making the engine, they're providing the basis for the engine in NA format... and Yamaha and Toyota are tuning it.
if a 2 litre 4 banger that revs out to 11,000rpm doesn't excite you then...
...then...
...then i'm sorry. but.. we just can't be friends anymore.. :p
and Matt - you realise that once you start agreeing with me... you die a little inside. feel that pain in your chest??? yeah. that's what happens when you agree with me.. :p

I would have one
if ppl think about it if you don't like the engine because it's not turbo then put a turbo on it or swap a turbo engine into it but just remember as fuel prices go up the turbo market will die and only be left to the 4x4 and trucks
