So finally got my first Soarer on the road with rego, and I desperately needed to fuel up and the only petrol station around only had 94 octane...anyway long story short the car kept stalling and then refused to start. All fixed with a good tank full of 98 and octane booster though. Anyway...the question is, is this normal for these cars? I was under the impression these cars would run with lower octane fuel just extremely rough..?

94 octane?

i assume you mean 95....

my TT soarer has run on every type of fuel i've put in it. 91...91+e10...95 and 98... needless to say it runs best on 98 octane. and the E10 played havoc with the fuel gauge. but they all ran smooth, you cant just notice a power/response difference, its nothing huge but definitely there

maybe your fuel pump is on the way out?

Absolutely bog stock TT...1991. Maybe this is just uncovering some other hidden problem with my ignition system. Nope, liberty petrol stations in SA have a choice between 91 and 94...

Mine literally would not even fire with the fuel in it, filled her up later with 98 and octane booster and started fine, ran nice and smooth. How odd.

weird indeed. maybe an ecu rest would have helped? anyway i run mine on 98 almost always, so not really a problem i ever encounter.

We have the n/a and have never encountered an issue with any fuel, including the United "Plus" ethanol blend which was 94 now 95 octane. In fact, I use the United fuel by choice when I can get it- cheaper than 91 and our car runs beautifully on it. There's only one outlet selling 98 in Cobar, BP, which is a less "comfortable" station than the Shell which is where I usually go- and 98 is a ridiculous price here.

As others have suggested, Luke, you may have other issues with fuel and/or ignition systems.

Sounds like classic fuel pump ECU problem. Do a search for "fuel pump ECU bypass" to get the test procedure.
