Ali ,The one thing to change on your 97 is the engine mounts and gearbox mount, but i do not think you need to change water pump /timing belt (it had new at 100ks) O2 sensors , crank pulley or change the engines gaskets ???

Soarer meet at Josh's place haha. There is no need for a new Crank Bolt or Water pump pulley unless old one is damaged, because these are not wear items, and also I take it your replacing the head gasket too no need for that unless blown and oil pump not needed unless problematic. IF your going this far might rebuild the whole motor. Replace Bushes on car with brand new Rubber ones for slightly better ride. Highly recommend new o2 sensor Engine and Gearbox mounts for less vibrations inside car. Good job on keeping the car in nice condition

I suggest going to local new car yard and purchasing new car instead ..... I mean , why not bulldoze a 15 yr old home and build new , instead of repainting ? Seems a bit excessive . Stick to normal service procedures as per booklet and enjoy

yeah gear box and engine mounts are a good one, i've had new engine mounts sitting in my shed for months, never bothered to put them in but i desperately need them. how far are you going with this ali... like boris said if your going to strip the head off, you might as well do new turbo seals, valve seals etc. i too thought that going to far as the oil pump seamed a bit over the top. how many k's has your car done and did it get a good 100,000k service? if your car is driving fine i wouldn't worry about doing HALF of those things

I dont think I will pull the head off. I bought the engine gasket kit because its cheaper than buying all the gaskets and seals by them self. Probably be changing front and rear main seal + cam seals + valve stem seals intake and exhaust gasket. The oil pump cost me next nothing so I thought might as well and I can just sell it off if need be. In terms of engine electrics, any point in new igniter, cam and crank sensors? Map sensor?

No use for New Igniter (Ignition Module), they rarely ever fail or become defective. Really it's hard to say if you really need them or not. Short answer is No. Long answer is maybe over time the MAP Sensor could give slightly inaccurate readings and it could decrease power and fuel economy, but this is all in theory and whether it really happens nobody knows. If your doing the whole lot why not I guess, you just got to draw the line somewhere.

Ali ,to change the valve stem seals the head has to come off ,unless you a air pressure tool to hold valve while you remove the springs. Is the engine out at the moment?

Boris I think you are right. Drawing the line somewhere is important. Yes Dave the engine will be coming out. I will be chucking in new steering bushings gearbox mount and engine mounts. Trying to source and oil filter relocation kit so I can do that as well. I have read up on valve stem seals and you have to have the right tools, and make sure that the valve doesnt fall back. Other than that it is possible to do it with the head on

Yep If it's out and you have the time do the stem seals, here's an awesome guide http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?49859-How-To-Valve-Stem-Seal-Replacement because there's nothing worse than giving an engine a good once over then finding out it blows a puff of blue smoke on startup. Just a thought too Ali, have you compression tested your engine? because if it's not 100% it might save you time to buy a long engine to work on so as to keep your car on the road longer

awesome link david. not a bad idea, buying a spare engine and re doing everything in your spare time rather then a rush to get the car back on the road. especially if you can get one for the $500 - $800 mark

David ,Alis car is a mint 97 with just over 100ks when I drove this car in the car yard were i worked it drove like new,it had a 100ks service ,belt , pump etc and was given a 5 year warranty , so i do not think Ali needs to do compression test, to be honest Ali "if its not broke dont fix it"

Dave there is a whole story behind this. As it turns out the engine was not so mint. Will let you know the details when I make a build thread

Can't wait to see said build thread! Dave Rose- I was thinking about a compression test because even in a mint engine it will tell you a fair bit (or rather verify an opinion). Its a cheap way of making sure the labour time and parts cost used to freshen up and engine aren't wasted, you want to be sure you'l get another 100k out of it after going to such an expense!
