Hi Guys.
I want to put a V8 into a BMW E30, still deciding which motor. LS1 and LS2 are too expensive and the car is not that heavy so doesn't need something too powerful.
I was thinking either Holden 308 from VT, Ford Windsor 220kw Version, VH45 or a 1uz-fe.
I'm just comparing them together, so i'd like to know from V8 Owners, what Terminal speeds (MPH) have you gotten with Small Mods like exhaust, headers, intake and tune?
Just want to quantify how well the 1uz will respond to mods compared to the Windsor Motor from the AU Falcons and Holden 308's.

A mate of mine with an emanage ultimate and full exhaust system managed to get 198 rwkw or 190 something pretty sure it was 198 rwkw with the 1UZ-FE V8. Theya are only a 4.0L though so although they rev right out unlike their counterparts. That's just my 2 cent's I hope an actual V8 enthusiast can prove me wrong but judging from my mates V8 Soarer, they are tough engines, just slowish in the soarer, but I guess that's comparing it to my TT. In an E30 it will probably be a good setup.

I would forget both the 304(not 308), and the ford, as they are cast iron engines, so heavy compared with the GEN111, and Soarer. Do a Google, lots of kits in the US for the GEN series into BMW. Maybe more costly, but far better result in the long run. Look for a book Chev LS Engine Conversion Handbook.

Not to keen on LS1, i don't like how they sound and plus more costly too
Yeah 1uz-fe definitely seems a nice choice, just trying to see how well it will perform compared to the Windsor which is what the Terminal speeds will tell as both cars are similar weight.
The Ford motor is more powerful stock for stock than 1uz-fe but I was wondering how things go when they are modded.
There is Kits to do Windsor into E30 which is why I was keen on it too.
I don't think there is any other V8's to Chose from, I was thinking Nissan VH45 but seems rare.

Bang for your buck, you cant go past a GEN series. But, its up to you what you do isnt it.
On a side note, cheapest way regardless of engine choice, is to buy a complete car for all your bits. I have just done a GEN111 conversion on my 1978 Chev ute, and bought a wrecked car for around what was asked for just a motor.

Good project. I've actually done this to my E36 with a 1UZ-FE.
Most people prefer the E30 swap, but for preference reasons I like the E36 since it's more modern and the engine can sit back further in the engine bay.
For the engine I planned to use the 1UZ-FE since day one, I knew how to work on them after having my Soarers/Celsior, plus they are cheap and light.
I personally wonder if the GM or Ford engines are the way to go, aren't those heavy with iron blocks? Otherwise theres the LS1/2/3+ range - but like you say the trouble is they are expensive.
Really it's just best go go with what you know and feel the most confident about.
With time and focus, along with money (I've spend over 20k on the whole car!) you can get some good results: Heres mine, engine bay is pretty much complete now... only job left to do is the finish the exhaust system.

I've had it going since August last year, did a few thousand naughty 'test' kilometers.
It went rather well then, but the stock 3UZ headers and 325i exhaust were killing the performance along with the 4 speed A341e having terribly long gears and no shift kit.
I took it off the road 3 months ago to sort out the final issues, namely replaced the trans with a 5 speed A650e with shift kit and a PCS TCM-2000 control unit.
All is left to get my welder mate to weld up the exhaust manifolds, unfortunately his work and my work schedules mean progress has been slow, but he does the best job I've seen anyone can do so I'd prefer not to go to any old welder to do the job.
The goal now is to get it back on the road and certified by late January.
