What is a BOV why is it needed?

The stock TT already has one so why do most people add a extra aftermarket one?

I thought they were not legal for street cars is this correct?

if you run high boost, its my understanding that the stock BOV will leak causing your boost to drop....
aftermarket ones can handle higher psi (depending on price)

a BOV prevents compressor surge, which i think is exhaust gasses travelling back towards the turbo once the throttle butterfly has been closed. air travelling backwards into a forward spinning turbo = bad.
however some people say compressor surge is BS.

atmospheric venting BOVs (ones that go ptshhh) are illegal. however full plumback ones (quiet) are legal (im pretty sure)

i think thats all correct what i just said

Yep same as Callum, I have permit. It seems in WA that as long as it isn't really loud it isn't really important to the pits inspectors. Good thing too, one example of common sense prevailing.

How can you get a permit for such things? Is this a WA only thing?

Hmm, perhaps I'm just a grumpy old bugger, but anything that makes a car louder without actually improving it in any way (i.e, blow off valves with bullhorn like attachments) are just stupid. Same with canon exhausts etc.

Too true on the wank factor - but as for sounding cool??? I can appreciate the asthetics of a nice set of wheels, but to me a 4 cylinder engine running huge boost with a 5 inch cannot farting out the back might as well just be a train going by or a jumbo taking off - its all just pointless noise. Guess its all a matter of perspective.

I'm with Matthew on this one, and I actually have an atmo venting BOV...
My stock one died, and being tight on cash I got the cheapest aftermarket one possible, which in this case was just a GFB Basic. It does make the psssht sound but it's pretty quiet.

A BOV of some sort is essential. How anyone can claim that compressor surge is BS is beyond me.

Thats not what your turbos think...

There is a reason turbo cars come from the factory with a BOV...

Ok so a BOV is needed, what is this surging,

the explanation I got from a mechanic was that it allows to pressure to release faster which is needed for gear changes so that the car doesn't run lean. Which some what makes sense, he said it also help to reduce turbo lag on the gear changes which didn't quite make sense to me.

I thought lag was due to the spool up time of the turbo, how would a BOV affect this.

By releasing back pressure, it allows the turbo to keep spinning so it is ready to go when you put your foot down again.

however, there is also an argument that a lot of people end up fitting a BOV that doesnt actually vent enough air quickly enough...ie they pick it cos it "sounds good", when in reality if its venting properly it shouldnt really be that loud.

True, the pssht noise definitely sounds like too much air being pushed through too small a space...

Out of curiosity what sort of power loss is there from having a very quite exhaust. Is there a such thing as a quite sports exhaust?

Personally I don't want to hear the exhaust at all unless I am WOT and 40004pm plus then I do but while cruising I don't want to hear a remote or faint sound from the exhaust.
