Hi All,

I searched the site for similar posts but nothing came up.

Iv owned my soarer now for about 2 months and for some reason I'm getting really bad fuel economy. At present, I'm getting about 350km to a tank which is really bad.

Hear are the facts.

1991 twin turbo
K&n air filter
2.5" exhaust cat back
1.5 shift kit
No further mods
Driving off boost 80 to 90% of the time
Premium 98 octane fuel
Turbo timer set for 1 minute cool down
I let the car warm up for about 3 to 4 minutes at the start of the day.

Iv read that changing the o2 censor may help?

I'm stuck as I have no idea how to fix and I know that I should be getting at least 450km to 500km around town.

If I took it to a place like "Chip Torque" on the Gold Coast who have a dyno, do u think they could diagnose any problems?

I'm just loosing to much money on petrol and need to get it fixed. Any suggestions or past experience would really help.

Thanks.

Can you do a fuel test with highway driving?

That's a much more reliable guide.

I took the o2 sensor out completely and it didn't get much worse. Only a little bit. Went from about 10.5l/100km to about 11.5l/100km. Mine is a vvti but as a rough guide driving off boost you should be able to get at least 12l/100km. That is 12 x 6 (for 600kms) is 72 litres. So at least 600km for 72 litres. I get about 400 kms but only fill up with 42 litres.

Usually ecu caps or some ecu problem but I personally haven't had this issue so I'm just guessing.

What Scott said, get the the caps in the ecu redone and put a new O2 sensor in. Don't worry about the warming up and cooldown, just don't rev the crap out of it for the first km. Make sure you have about 36psi in your tyres. Check plugs and coilpacks are healthy. All these little things add up to worse full economy if they are not right.

Thanks Scott, i agree i should be getting roughly 600km give or take.

Hey Ethan, let me know how u go with recapping the ecu. I did a quick read up and it's common for 1J's to have leaking caps in cars over 15years old. Iv not looked at my ecu but will next chance to see if any of my caps have leaked.

Iv got a few new parts to be installed so ill source a new o2 sensor and have it installed too.

Cheers.

Hey Ethan. There not cheap. I buy from kudos sometimes and there's is $264
http://www.kudosmotorsports.com/catalog/toyota-lambda-oxygen-sensor-genuine-toyota-soarer-jzz31-30gt -supra-jza80-szr-2jzge-p-838.html

Would be good if we could do a group buy and get them from china for $50 each. Problem is u have to buy 10 at a time. Just shows the markup.

By the way, how did u go with the caps on your ecu? Any luck fixing it?

nah i didn't, i recieved the caps, 5 of each actually so if you want to do it i can send you them for free if you want.

i ended up pulling it out but they looked fine and are a good brand so i think it may have been recapped previously (i asked if anyone could confirm that the original caps were nichicons but no one has replied to that yet.)

o2 sensors are expensive. i called around supercheap/autobarn/repco places and found them for around 80 i think but i'm not sure if they are a direct fit?

I fitted two new ones to our VVTi last year. I got them from this place:
http://www.o2sensors.com.au/search/application?makeID=43&modelID=2006&engineID=2351&x=66&y=16

If that doesn't load just go to home page and re-enter car details. I actually needed two different ones (VVti have extractors with a front O2 sensor for each bank of 3 pipes) but got two the same- which meant I had to take plug off rear old one and attach to the new one with incorrect plug cut off- and the wires aren't easy to join had to get butt connectors and then wrap.

The second one I needed was more expensive for some reason. The box comes with anti-seize tube. Good service, too.

My sensors were 22mm so you'll need a decent ring spanner (feed it over the plug) as the "special tools" are expensive for a once-off use.
