Just been reading about a340 trans they say it is heat that will kill them. and they say most heat comes from the torque convertor when its unlocked. s small engine with a transfer box pushing into a head wind can stay unlocked . So in theory an a 340 trans will last longer behind the v8 than a small engine 4x4. gotta love trivia

Yes, But article says factory cooler will not keep up if convertor is unlocked for any length of time. They recommend larger cooler. so yes you are correct in what you say. I got this of a 4x4 forum discussing strength of gearboxes. they said a340 has its weakness, but one guy who worked at a transmission place said he had never seen one come in for repair. This was extreme 4 wheel driving. Rock crawling. They also discussed the r154. and how to beef it up .basically a stronger front bearing retainer plate and better sincro rings. The guy doing the article had 500hp in front of his . said put sincro rings and bearings in it as part of routine maintenance.. said gears never break. Im starting to crap on a bit to much. might back off a bit in case I start getting hate mail.

Small engine will have 4.7 / 5.2 diff gears and different torque converter, it wont be unlocked at cruise.
Mate had an A340 behind a 410rwkw 7M-GTE and then a Turbo (T04z) 6ltr L98 chev in a MA70 supra, Transmission never let it down. (was built with Raybestos blue plates, shift kit etc)
An A340E with a Shift kit and Transmission cooler will handle 250rwkw well, many people on here have ran their Soarers with this setup for years without problems.
2nd Factor depends on driving style, doing burnouts with no airflow will put a lot of heat into the fluid faster than it can be removed.
3rd Factor is how much wear the gearbox has already.
Car was designed to run 7 PSI so when you make it have more power you need to design and upgrade everything around it.
My car makes about 250rwkw through a 1JZ-GTE, A340E with Shift kit and gearbox has shown no sign of weakness.

It all depends on how you drive though. I remember there was a w58 behind a twin turbo 1uz making 500ishrwhp and the box held fine for ages. Some people blow up w58s on a stock 2jzge...Same story with the autos, take care of them and they will be fine

Like Ali said, provided it's looked after it should last. Mine has survived 330,000km on a single turbo soarer running just below 220rwkw. No trans cooler and no shift kit. Still running flawlessly but I have a shift kitted auto ready to replace it. I only use Toyota TIV fluid and change it every 80,000km.
My first soarer (completely stock) blew the auto after a couple of months of ownership and only 150k on the clock. The previous owner gave it a hard time and didn't service it properly.
I wouldn't try to run more than 250rwkw through a shift kitted box as that appears to be their limit.
