| Here's the results. Didn't gain as much as I was hoping. Made about 25rwkw more and 50nm of torque. Its hard to see but the yellow line is e85.

| But how does it drive? And are you happy with it compared with the Tomei M8280? |

| Yeah down low torque is just crazy. Boost was left untouched because I want to be able to run 98 without changing the boost settings. Its about 18-19 psi. |

| Well that's all that matters then! Down low torque must make it very fun! And it must be rather quick as a result? |

| Yeah it's good to drive. It made the same peak power as the Tomei (on 98) but is totally different to drive. It would bog down unless you had the revs high and brought the clutch up just right. A normal take off with the tomei would make the car seem so slow. Then out of no where 4,500rpm it would completely go nuts. I think its pulling just as hard now but it doesn't come on suddenly. It feels quicker and isn't a slug under 4,000rpm. |

| Let's see how I go with mine eh? I'm hopeful a good standalone, a dash of E85 and my j-pipe delete and manifold can make an improvement to the Tomei. My new 1NZ coils should help with spark and I should have some nice steady AFR's as a result. I got sick of the auto, which didn't help with the lag, but once I hit 3000rpm as you said, it would go nuts and you'd be well and truly over the speed limit. Head to the drags mate, see what time you pull You might be pleasantly surprised! |

| Nice work Scott! Could you give me a run down of your mods please mate or do you have a build thread somewhere on here? |

| Yeah mate it's a 1jz vvti. Has a bolt on blitz turbo. 850cc injectors, 430l/h e85 walbro fuel pump. FMIC, 3" turbo back exhaust. Emanage ultimate. Few minor things can't think of everything but did 3 new coil packs and 3 new leads (4 years ago). Plugs gapped to 0.8 and one heat range colder. I was thinking of putting one of those off road use only cats in it to get me a few more gains. It feels great now but I feel at the 280rwkw mark it will be a weapon with this response. |

| Yeah Tai the tuner told me it made 273rwkw but it had a bit of pinging so he took the timing back a little and then some for safety margin and final figure was 266kw. I want to make a 12.9 second or better 1/4 pass. It feels like it might be there especially with some grippy tyres. |

| Great gains.. I now have a servo selling e85 5 minutes from my work so its an option for me now. I will definitely give it a go when my car is back on the road. |

| To James, or anyone else that can comment - you've mentioned a few times that going to a Tomei increased your lag substantially. If you had your time again, what would you do in terms of upgrade path? I was thinking of a Tomei for my VVT-i but not if it only kicks in well past 4000 rpm. |

| Robert, i've often thought about that. If doing my time again, I'd choose something like an internally gated GTX3076 (with an adaptor plate to the factory turbo manifold) The key is making sure it has a ball bearing center, as this should help it spool up a little quicker. The Tomei M8280 Arms turbo has a journal bearing. Another option would be a HKS 8260. I don't hate the Tomei, it's been a good bit of kit to me thus far. I wanted something that would come with all the stuff needed to bolt it on, and I knew little about other available turbochargers at the time. Tomei's claim that it has near factory response is a blatant lie. I've found that the Tomei M8280 greatly relies upon supporting mods; the more you have, the more you'll get out of it. For instance, I ditched a dual 2.5inch exhaust and went to a single 3.75inch exhaust, and the gains were monumental. Once my car is finished, I think I'll have pushed the Tomei turbo to it's absolute max, and it will be interesting to see how it responds to E85. I can update you then if you'd like. If not going too wild, you could always fit a steel wheel to your factory turbocharger, and upgrade the internal wastegate with a stronger spring. This would be a good compromise between response, power and not going overboard.
You can get some ideas from this thread regarding mounting a GT3076 on an adaptor plate using the stock 1j vvti Soarer manifold. http://soarercentral.com/sc-forum/messages/51875/294314.html?1265498823 In conclusion, the Tomei isn't bad, but an adaptor plate with a GTX3076 would be the go. Might involve a little more hands on work getting oil/water lines made up, and a dump pipe, but in my opinion a more versatile turbocharger. |

| I took the Tomei off. I think if you do all the supporting mods and push 300rwkw is will be pretty decent. By itself I think it's too big f or the 1jz. It wasn't just laggy it was completely gutless under 3,000rpm. In a manual it just wasn't fun. Either I had to be giving it heaps or driving it like a grandpa. There was no in between. In an auto I think it might be better. I would just high flow the stock for good gains and driveability. I found this blitz turbo at a decent price so went with that. |
