what's so bad about it? it's for a boat.. ECU on boats = much higher chance of being stuck in the middle of the lake.

It does make sense for boat usage - still - SU's? Why? They are good carbs when you have time to constantly coddle them - but webbers or delortos are SO much better - actually stay in tune for more than a few seconds, and much easier to keep balanced in duel carb applications - plus they look way cooler.

Are you saying the 1UZFE is not torquey and long lasting? I'd have to totally disagree with that. For a 4 litre n/a engine, the 1UZ is both very torquey and very reliable.

Experience with the 4 litre in powerboat racing has found it lacking in torque when compared with Chevs & Fords. While it will readily rev harder in a car, it doesn't reach it's top revs in boats due to the torque shortfall. Most ski boats and circuit boats have no gears so every start is comparable to starting your car in top gear. If you can't get enough torque down low to get going you will never make good boat speed. The 4 litre is also heavier than the Chev despite it's aluminium block. Tha addition of 3 extra camshafts and a much larger crankshaft are just a couple of the components that increase it's weight.

Standard 4 bolt Chev stripped of cast iron manifolds and accesories. We have compared them when doing the transplants. I won't quote numbers because I can't recall them but we were initially surprised at the outcome.

I suppose if it must be non-EFI then....
But I do agree Webers would have been better; 8 of 'em.

Most boats use a blower with the 1UZ for the reasons given above.

Mathew
Powerboats run in engine capacity classes. The 4 litre would run in the 4.6 litre class which is an open class for carby and injected motors. Ever heard of a 283 cu in Chev? Classes above 4.6L are 5.2L, 6L and unlimited (unrestricted capacity). If an engine has forced induction, it's capacity is multiplied by 1.6.

Ah, well it would definitely make sense to use a Chevy 283 in that case, regardless of weight - not only does it have over 600 cc's greater capacity, but there are SO many performance parts available you can make it do pretty much whatever you want just by ordering the right cams, rods etc. right off the shelf.

Surprisingly, the fastest 4.6L boat is powered by a V6 Buick which was the base motor used for the 3.8L V6 Commodore
