Ive noticed quite a few celsiors that would go past me had that horrible tapping noise.
Also a stock soarer v8 went by a while ago and accelerated heavily - i could then hear that stupid tapping noise again.

My old soarer had a very quite tap but nothing compared to these i heard.. probably how its meant to sound? hmm

Anyway great to see a fix on this at planet soarer
http://www.planetsoarer.com/camshafts/camshaft4.html

I thought the tap was a really bad problem like a worn engine bearing or something really expensive to fix like that.

Who has this tapping problem really bad in their v8?

How many kms have your soarers done? Does the tap start after a certain amount of kms or is it random?

Mike, it's one of those "How long's a piece of string" questions.
Depends on servicing (or lack thereof), has the car been abused when cold.

Our UZZ30 has 137,673kms on the clock, and due to the previous owner, and myself being fusspots with servicing, it has NO tappet noise at all.

Soarers dont have lifters

Cam bucket noise is nothing to worry too much about. Interestingly my old V8 had done 250,000K and was fairly quiet.

You know what I meant.

Mine has 82k on the clock. It was sitting unmoved for 2 years so was probably a bit neglected.

The tapping is only very light, You have to turn the music and the A/C fan off to hear it from the inside.

Sorry Dan, pet peve people using terms like lifters and rocker covers on OHC engines. (Kevin, they are CAM covers) - just call me anal

Wouldnt worry about it then unless its really bugging you - it's unlikely to be affecting performance at all and its a big job to fix it - and I'm guessing once you get moving you can't hear it any more? Did my Dolomite Sprint engine once - HUGE job as you not only have to remove the cam shaft (cant do it in place as the shims sit UNDER the buckets right on top of the valve stems - yay for the brits!), but the cam followers (single cam, 16 valve engine with followers operating the exhaust valves) - anyway, took me the whole weekend, two full 10 hour days to get it right, and 6 months later it was back to tapity tapity tap (again, yay for the brits)

OK anal.

I've found that this problem is most easily rectified by use of the vitted volume knob. :-)

Yay for the brits!!!!

Cursing the Jap's today - spent the morning trying to fix a Levin door handle - the control arm clip had broken off, then the window had been wound down on the control arm bending it. My hands are way too big to work comfortably in the space they give you behind the door skin...
