Quoted from Australian IT article. "Microsoft showed off Windows Automotive-based navigation systems in three vehicles -- a Honda Odyssey minivan, a Honda Ridgeline truck and a 2006 Honda Civic. Beyond the Honda vehicles, the company also has deals to pre-install its Automotive software platform in vehicles from BMW, Mercedes and Volvo. It said Italian automaker Fiat would introduce Windows Automotive this year for consumers to integrate devices such as mobile phones with Bluetooth connectivity and MP3 players with their other in-car electronic gear." It will be easy to tell which cars are running the MS Automotive software. They'll be the ones having to pull over to the side of the road every 30 minutes to close all their windows, turn the car off then restart it again......

Funny how people still diss windows so much, even though XP is a pretty stable product. I can run my machine for days without restarting it, and I'm a software developer, so I do all sorts of wierd stuff with it. These days its really only malware etc. that causes Windows to become unstable - if you make sure you're properly protected, there isnt anything wrong with it. Having said that, its still fun to have a go at Bill

| Ahhhhh good - time to roll this one out then !!!! ......... sorry Brenton !!! At a recent computer expo Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry & stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon." In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics: 1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day. 2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car. 3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You'd pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, & reopen the windows before you could continue. 4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver, such as a left turn, would cause your car to shut down & refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine. 5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was >reliable, 5 times as fast & twice as easy to drive - but would run on only 5% of the roads. 6. The oil, water temperature, & alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single warning light : "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" 7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying. 8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out & refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key & grabbed hold of the radio antenna. 9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car. And last but not least: 10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the car engine Off.

The problem with XP is the users. If there were no users to f**k the thing up it will run forever. You install XP SP2 and just sit it there, dont use it, and it will run forever. I work with a guy who stumbled accross a PC at one of his sites which was left installing SP2 for 6 months... still running strong after 6months (granted it was stuck on the install! =P )

I had one of my Windows xp machines running for 2.5 months and it wasn't just sitting there idle either, had to be rebooted as I made some changes to the OS that required a reboot. I'm like Matthew, work in software development and it is quiet stable these days.

I have a couple of older machines running XP (pentium II, III and Athlon) that will take any amount of abuse thrown at them. My main computer which has to be fast and have sh!tloads of memory for DVD stuff craps itself at the mere thought of opening IE or any MSOffice application. It not too fussed about some DVD burning apps either. It's generally a geat big PITA.

My storage computer on our network is running Windows XP service pack 2. As far as I know it has never been restarted in 6+ months. Still, you can use it to browse the net at any time if you need to.

Fellas.... I was just have a dig at Microsoft (the only company in the world to be named after it's founders sexual prowess). I didn't want to launch a whole "my pc has been running for 9 years without a reboot" thing....

My son tells me it's always the users, a few years ago he was working on the help desk at OPTUS when a woman rang in a most irate tone about her Pc which was connected through OPTUS. What was the problem he asked her....."Well I pushed the HELP button on my computer DAYS ago and no one has rung me!!!!"

| I was running a Win98 machine in my bmer back in 1992 so where is the freshness of this news. But keep up the nonsence about why Bill gates has killed the computing world, then when we are all finished he will still be counting his money. It's the implementation not the instrumentation.
