hihi

just wondering how much road noise people get when driving their car on the highway? is it pretty loud? is anyones car close to silent?

just looking for a general consensus

when my car is cruising at 100-110.. the road noise is fairly annoying. all my seals ar perfect.. maybe its the non standard wheels and tyre tread? i dunno

Brand of tyres, road surface can all make a difference.
Some of the new bitumen has a rubber compound in it, and running on it is very quiet.

Probably tyres. Shot bushes may transmit more noise into the cabin. Your interior noise level should be around 78dbA at 120km/h on average highway, if you can measure it.

Tyres make a huge difference. Generally directional tyres (>>>>>>>>>) are noisier.

I had Falken Zeiz directionals and they were prety good. Now i have Kingstar directionals... they are much noisier.

Moral of the story? If you want minimal road noise go with non directional.

www.tirerack.com includes noise as one of its rating factors when you do a tyre comparison there. I grabbed a small random sample of tyres and the directional one in the list was by far the quietest of the four and also the longest-wearing and highest rated for ride comfort. The latter points may have quite a bit to do with noise generation.

The pedestrians get a bit noisy as they go under, but it's those walking frames screetching on the tarmac that really set my teeth on edge.

sorry Lincoln, nothing intended. The tyre one was curiosity and the Camry one was mainly meant to be funny, with information as a side benefit.

I think I paid about $620-$640 for the work including the two Redbacks which were, maybe, $180 each? From some other reports the labour may be a little on the high side but I thought it was worth it for the quality of advice. Definitely noticed performance changes, to the tune of about 12rwkw and well worth it for that. No noise change at cruise but a V8 roar under full throttle.

Lower profile tyres generally allow more noise to be transmitted.

Need to pull mine out today to run a cable out for the ipod. Probably better vac all the cigarette ash out while I'm at it.
