| I've been hearing a bit of talk lately about people wanting to go the route of a vented bonnet, I have recently come into the possesion of this...
and was wondering if any of you guys would be interested in one too. Basically I am planning on making a mould of it so I can start churning them out. Once I have the mould, I would be able to make them in fibreglass, carbon, carbon/kevlar or pretty much whatever type of matting/resin combination that you'd want. The only thing is that i am not going to go through the hassle of making a decent mould unless I get at least 8 confirmed orders, otherwise I'll just graft it into my bonnet as is. The vent is about 80 cm deep and 105 cm wide. I am NOT offering any advice as to wether it would be legal or not in your state, you can ask your local state transport office yourself. The vents are rear facing. For a better idea as to what it looks like on a car, it sort of looks like the vent on the bonnet of the TRD lemans supra. I have made a bonnet for Todd's mz20 soarer out of carbon with this scoop grafted into it and it reduced under bonnet temperatures by 24 degrees (only weighed 8kg too!), so may be of use for track days, modded turbo setups, etc. |

| BTW, if I had to 'guestimate' a price now for the finished product, I'd say about $250 for gel coated fibreglass, $350 for carbon look (2 layers of carbon backed up with fibreglass), $500 for full carbon and if you wanted it made out of the carbon/kevlar composite, you'd have to weigh up what's more important, a vent or your own island!!! This of course may be slightly higher or lower depending on the cost of the materials and how long it would take me to do. And just before you all start asking about full bonnets, as I know you're thinking about it! For the time that it would take me to do a one off carbon bonnet, I wouldn't do it for any less $2000, PLUS materials. So in other words, no |

| Wouldn't these be illegal as you can't have reversed bonnet scoops as in the case of an oil leak, it goes on your windscreen you can't see and crash and die? |

| VL Walkinshaw had 'reversed scoops' from the factory. EL XR6 had small ones. If you're leaking that much oil, then you'll surely die from the ensueing fireball, and oil on the windscreen will be the least of your worries. |

| That's interesting as I said in a previous post, you can't legally have forward facing vents in SA. But in all seriousness if you look at most of the cars (especially TT's) on this forum, they'd be defectible for something or another, just depends on how picky they want to be. When the MK1 VT commodore was first released, it could be defected for 23 things in SA, and that's straight from holden! ANY fibreglass front or rear bar is defectible as it has not passed ADR's for impact resistance, so if you already have a fully defectible body kit, a bonnet vent wouldn't hurt now would it?!? |

| Let me see now, this is not "two wrongs make a right", no, it is "may as well get hung for a sheep as a lamb". Who needs an under-age lamb anyway? |

| Ok then, so everyone that has said that they wanted some bonnet vents was obviously just talking bollocks. Not to worry then, looks like my car will be all the more unique then. Still think I'll make the mould though, just incase anyone would want one in the future. Ha, I bet you'll all be knocking my door down if those aerodynamic undertrays that Neil is experimenting with are a good fit. He said that he'll swing a set my way for me to copy. BTW, any news on them yet Neil? |

| Hmmmm.......yes true, BUT we are going off Ben's topic, and this isn't a WA thread. Sorry Ben............Back to the topic of vented bonnets.

| i know this is probably very difficult or maybe even impossible at this stage... but some pics of THAT bonnet design on a Soarer would probably get some wallets opening. I would consider one, would have to paint it white, but would consider one... |

| Best I can do at this stage would be to take a pic of my car with the vent on top of the bonnet. Maybe apply some photoshop magic to get it looking sort of like it's meant to be there. As some of you are aware, I have nearly no interior atm, so spending money on my bodywork isn't high on my priority list at the moment, just thought that I'd offer my services to ya'll. James, as for colouring, that's up to you! Every paint job is different, hence why panel shops have to 'blend' every time they do a repair. Ergo, there is no way that I could offer them pre-painted. Closest I could come to that would be the gel coated option. Basically a 'gel coat' is coloured polyester resin that is brushed onto the mould before any fibreglass matting is applied. This ensures a uniform finish in both colour, and texture. Once it is grafted onto the bonnet (from underneath would give the smoothest look), it is then treated like any other body panel, sanded, primed and painted. Simple eh? |

| Andrew, that's be a job for a panel beater, not a home job, but it basically entails this. Cut the hole in the bonnet (up to you wether or not you retain the cross bracing, losing it would be much simpler, but would restult in a weaker substructure), insert vent in from underneath and attach by either using panel weld, or riviting the tab to the bracing, bog and smooth over the joins, prime and paint. |

Excuse the dodgy photoshop work, I've had a WAY too stressful day to worry about a class A effort when all I'm trying to do is give you a basic idea as to what it may look like. Probably should sit further towards the front of the car as well, but you get the drift right? |
