I too went out looking a R32, but came home with my soarer. Reasons; much more sexy, more comfort, and yes still can be mistaken for a new car. They both basically had the same goodies I wanted in a ride. Straight six, turbo, rear wheel drive. And black. But the soarer had a better upgrade future. 3liter,while skyline 2.6litre.

There was an article in a recent magazine I read about the upgrade path between the 6L GM V8 versus the Ford turbo 6. Basically they broke it into 5 'steps' based around the cost of doing the mods, and then compared the power and drag strip times for each. That is: step one was the normal BPU and cost say around $1500, and step 5 was 'all out' and cost $15000 and included complete rebuilds, head work, gearbox strengthening etc.
That is what this thread really needs. I am sure if you go back through HPI/PI/Zoom etc you could do a comparison yourself.
If I was to guess, The 1JZ would win the BPU race being so restricted, the RB25 would win the middle steps, and the 1JZ would come back strong in the back end based around their immensely strong construction and reputation for making big power 'unopened.'

It was much of muchness for step 1, the ford dominated right through to the 'go nuts' step where it evened out again. The article was well thought through, as whilst you can make a heap of power from the turbo easily versus the V8 (much like the TT/V8 argument on here) the support systems are much more fragile/have less head room in the Ford. The article took this into account, so the dollar figure wasn't just on making the power, but also making sure you could drive the car with the power.
I am thinking it was a Zoom magazine as it was mostly straight line drag racing. $15000 spent on an S15, WRX/EVO or Rx-7 would have you a much faster and more fun circuit car/streeter.
