I'm thinking of trading in my car for a new Civic. Has anyone recently traded their car in or know of anyone that has? What would be a good amount? So far, I've been offered $8000 from Mazda and $6000 from Honda. I'm looking for at least 10. Does that seem realistic? Car is in good condition with around 107,000 km.

Hi Steven , From my experience you'll be lucky to get 10k from a dealer.....go private. I remember when I was selling my gold soarer almost 2 years ago they tried to offer me of 8k and I was looking at buying a 65k car at that time... I would have rather put it on bricks than sell it for that , in the end I got what I wanted privately ( Thanks Neil ). You have a nice looking Soarer so sell it for what its worth there will always be a buyer.

Even with our soarers value declining recently (as most used cars have) $10K for your V8 should be easy to get. Dealers will take it off you for $6 to $8K then put it up in the yard for $13 to $14 ....so dont get sucked in.

haha, going from a Soarer to a Civic, I know. But the cost of petrol is killing me, plus the new Civics look alright and they even have a digital speedo just like the Soarers! Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have a try selling it privately.

I know, even my 3 litre is pretty expensive to run - did a 600km run on Saturday and averaged 10.8 km/l which is not too bad for some fairly heavy footed overtaking and with 3 adults in the car. Still, was over $80 worth of fuel. Mind you, would have been a much less plesent trip for me as the driver in a smaller car I guess.

I dont see any other car on the market at the moment, that would make me want to trade my Soarer. Fuel is expensive, but think how much fuel could be purchased for the change over costs of a new car. My pleasure in life is my family, and my car, so fuel and food is needed to sustain both. You are a long time dead.

Spot on Ian. Honestly, if you drive it normally, it won't use that much more fuel then other cars, unless you get tempted, which happens quite often actually Either way, that extra 3 or 4 litres of fuel is worth it.

Hehe, that's why you buy a hybrid isn't it? To save money on petrol right? The fact that pay-back period from the savings you get on petrol is about 15 years is beside the point, but at least you're saving money on petrol... I say forget the fuel miser cars and drive a decent car while petrol is still available to the average driver. It'll cost you $10k to upgrade, so that you can save $1k-$2k a year. So that's a 5 - 10 year payback period during which you could have been driving a fun car. And by the end of that period both cars will probably be valued about the same anyway. How's my maths?

Actually, what are everyone's thoughts on the '99 Lexus GS300? Any experience with them? I've been looking at them for some time now but there just doesn't seem to be that many for sale in Victoria. I agree with everyone about petrol. The Soarer does have pretty decent fuel economy for a heavy V8. Mine drops to as low as 9L on the freeway (freeway cruising, gosh I'm gonna miss that), but on the negative, can jump to as high as 22L in stop start traffic. The bad thing is, because I work fairly close to home, even though I'm burning roughly 17L per 100km, its still cheaper than using public transport.

The new Civic is not a bad car at all according to the tests made. It looks funky, goes well and can be made to carry quite a bit with the rear seats laid down. I might even buy one some day but it would be as a second car. The Soarer is just too good to let go.

I must admit I quite like the new Civic myself. It also got a great rap from 5th Gear.

The rear end isn't the prettiest, but it does seem to be a nice small car. But for the price I think I'd rather buy a secondhand DC5 Integra for similar money.

| I thought the one I saw on 5th Gear looked different, more sporty. I don't think that's the new Civic. Too boxy.
I think that is what I saw. Much sleeker. |

Just remember, 5th Gear tests all the European models, not the oz spec ones Maybe you should buy one over there and bring it in as an import

| Australia only gets the Thai built sedan Civic. Ours is the mid-spec model with 103kw. The Sport model is the top of the range (not counting the hybrid) with a 114kw 2.0 litre, leather, sunroof, blinkers in mirrors etc. The two door coupe is U.S. built only. Pity we don't get the Si version with 197hp motor.

Our 5 speed manual with rear spoiler and carpet mats was $28,000 on the road. The dealer said there was a two month waiting list, but that was mainly for the 5 speed automatic. We were able to get a car in stock as manual is not as popular!
