I need some new 235/45/17 inch tyres but unsure of which ones to get. I checked out the write up on planet soarer and pretty much gathered that the kumho 712's are the go for good cheap tyres. With this in mind i started ringing around and no one seems to stock any and they cant be ordered in either. They just have the 711's in stock.
I also flicked through an old 2001 MOTOR magazine, which had a comparison for bang for your buck tyres comparison of 17" tyres and they said the falken grb451 to be the best.
Now my question is what tyres should i get for less than $200 ea???
kumho 711's? or 712? (if i can find a place to get them) nankangs ns 2's? falken 326? or 451? sumitomo HTR z2? nexen? clear? regal?

Euge,
I bought 4 Goodyear Revspec RS-02 235/45/17 August last year for $210 each. These are quality tyres not el cheapos (they won the Wheels Sports Tyre of the Year last year outperforming Michelin and Pirelli and Bridgestone etc). I shopped around a bit for this price, and am very happy with them. (The tyres also come with a free rotation and balance every 5,000km.)
Just a couple more bucks and a couple of phonecalls can get you into a premium tyre instead of a Korean one.

I found sumitomos better than Falkens, Kumhos better than both. Sumitomos were soft though. not great in the wet. falkens let go easily if you push em round corners
i wont even compare the dunlops and bridgestones to any of the above. they rock!
A lot of people here seem to like nankangs, but i havent tried them

Nakangs are a good tyre for me mate (cheap too), only real issue i had with them is make sure you keep them well pressured, because they are a hard walled tyre

mums car (uzz31) has falken on the rear and as soon as there is a little bit of rain the car kicks out sideways way way way to easy. bit of fun sometimes but yeh not really the best idea.
i call them plastic tyres. because they are rock hard with no grip.

Gotta agree with Tim here... Cant go wrong with thw Nankang NS2's... and especially on the V8 as they have a load rating of 95H. Most tyres coming out have a 91 or 92 rating.

My car currently has some "noname" tyres. I never really paid much attention to these ones. I used to have Bridgestone G-Grids on my other car and they were amazing tyres, except that they were a bit too noisy if the car spins out. They were expensive as well: $135 per tyre for 205/60/15! Well worth the money though

Do yourself a favour, do some research, read some tyre tests. The only way to compare tyres is in a blind test in a range of conditions in the same car - wet and dry braking, wet and dry cornering, slalom, roadnoise etc etc. Personal opinions are interesting but in my experience pretty subjective. Wheels had a good comparison of about 10 different 235/35/17 tyres in 2005. As I mentioned above, the Goodyear Revspec RS-02 came out the winner. They were testing on an XR6 which is probably a similar weight to a Soarer.
Can't understand the logic of saving a couple of bucks by fitting crap tyres to a powerful car. I picked up RS-02's for $210 by shopping around.

I started of with Nankang NS-2's and they were great but noisy, had no problems going around corners like crazy when it was pouring with rain!!! Then I saw all the hype about the Kumho 712's. But apparently they are starting to phase them out and replace them with Kumho SPT KU31's. So I did some research on the web, and they seems to best the 712's a little. So now I have myself some KU31's, they seem quieter and no problems for 2000kms so far. Now bring on the wet season!!!

well cheers for everyones input
i opted for the kumho 712's. Just couldnt look past them after what the guy in the shop told me and all the reviews i have read. There must be a reason why the police and driver training places use them. Paid $175ea which wasnt too bad.

Best 235/45R17 value for money-wise is the MAXXIS tyre. Available from Bob Jane, they are only $145 each, and came third out of 14 in wheels or motors tyre test shootout last year. Great value for money. They beat a lot of big brandnames in a test that included G force, wet/dry lap times, and of course BRAKING.

Well I tired the 712's and I didn't not like them at all, funnily enough the tyre reviews view 711's as being better.
So I tried those as well and they were too.
The only other tyre I would bother to try would be a P Zero as I have heard similar things to what the Michelins do.
As to the dealer price yes that is true but how long are you going to have the tyres and what is that worth. Your tyres make contact with the road and is one of the most important aspects of your cars handling and safety.
Is is worth saving a tank of petrol to get 4 tyres instead of 4 good tyres which most people will have for 3 years. I personally dont think so and I'm reminded of it every time I get into my car and drive in the wet.

I am currently running sumitomos on my SC400 and find them quite good. They do have a bit of a tendency to lose traction on the back when pushed in the wet but otherwise good.
