What do you make of this - Gimmick or plausible?

i just top up last night with this fuel see what i can get out of it.
My 91 V8 uses normal unleaded & get 480KMS bumper to bumper traffic (M5) daily to the city centre.
With 15L reserve exactly 7days before next fill.
See what can i get this time.

It says that it reduces waste heat by reducing engine deposits. This is usually done by adding detergents. There's possible gimmick factor there. I can only think that engine deposits will contribute a small amount to waste heat, but I suppose every bit counts.

If you really want to improve engine efficiency by reducing waste heat then try this -

I filled up with this fuel last week (premium unleaded). I got the same mileage out of it as if i was using the normal fuel. I don't think that this works

You need to compare the average mileage from five or more fillups on each of the petrol types driving the same way in the same conditions if you want to make a comparison of any sort. One fill to another will be meaningless even if it shows an improvement. You are trying to measure a fairly small difference. For example, if you normally get 500km from 65L of 91 then do not expect more than about 525km from exactly the same quantity of premium. Also, was your tank essentially empty when you switched types?

Nick, I'd disagree. Without going into the whole fuel argument again most people have said premium or ultimate results in better mileage.

I always use premium unleaded. In Japan these cars run on 100 octane fuel right? There is a sticker on the petrol cap saying that premium is supposed to be used. My tank had a few litres of fuel when i tried shell's fuel. Didn't make a difference. I'll try it a few more times but i'm not sure if it's going to make a difference

Wasn't the idea of reducing engine deposits to improve air flow, by reducing turbulence, and keep valve seats tight, i.e. to keep the upper cylinder components like new?
This won't happen overnight but would be gradual over a good few tank fulls of the new Shell fuel.

Like Luke, I too thought you meant premium vs low-octane unleaded. Sorry.

If you were brand-switching 98, do not expect any noticeable difference. If you were trying the new economy fuel, I think it would be much the same (cynicism).

If you are trying out the 100 RON Shell fuel then I would expect to see no change but if anything a small deterioration in fuel economy rather than improvement, owing to the 5% ethanol content.

What is the difference between RON and normal fuel? A lot of european cars are supposed to be using 91 or 96 RON. What does RON stand for?

It is normal fuel. RON stands for Research Octane Number, a rating.

ok, i guess RON sounds a bit better and people who know nothing abouts cars think that this is a better fuel. Looks like its just a marketing thing

Simple, inferior minds do those have that argue about fuel. Controlled and made by the dark side (opec) fuel is. Block this debate from our minds and concentrate on using the force to propel out cars we must.

Nothing like a bit of 'sudafed' hehehe

Nah, I'm sick as a dog at the moment, been up since 4:30 IN THE AM!!! Suppose that'l learn me for ignoring quarantine signs...

Just upon this debate, if you take the time to read the signs at the shell pumps, you'll see that the 'fuel formula used in the world record challenge differs from the formula available in Australia'. So, once again, it's the fuel that shell rejects that makes shell the best. Only problem is that we get the crap stuff :-(

And it sounds like you been Fanging it straight away, so the ECU thinks your a Hoon ,(which you are cause you drive a soarer :-) ) And it says, Ok Lotsa Timing, Lotsa fuel, this guy loves hanging the ass out! hehe
