Today I finally got my car back from the mechanics/panel beaters, everything was sweet. I drove it around the whole day, but tonight I wanted to go out.

So I go to my car in the driveway and the rear window was fogged up, so I start the car and press the button for the rear demister.

It started smelling like burning plastic, then 2 seconds later a big BANG and the whole window cracked!

What could have caused this?
And where can I replace it from?

.... hay!
It could have been that your window way crazy cold, and the demister heated it up, and BAM.

They fixed a bump in the rear qrt panel and resprayed the car.

Ahh did I mention, they also took my rear window out and put it back in..

So I definatelly know its the panel beaters fault(and he'll be picking up the bill), but what I'd like to figure out is why has this happened?

OK I'll theorise,
The burning plastic smell resulted from a short introduced by the panel beater creating excessive heat whih just happened to also contact the glass. Istead of a gentle even heating as per normal there was a hotspot which raised the temp of the glass rapidly over a small area and the resultant stresses on the crystaline structure of the glass caused the fracture.

There are two different colours to the glass, green and grey. If new you will not get much change out of a $1000 if you are lucky. I have one with hole for the rear wiper, but the wires for the demister are damage (cut from the people that removed the window tint for raws).

Front windscreen is like 180 bucks fitted.

The cost is because of the antenna embedding etc isnt it? plus they probably dont make them any more..

I'd go with Tom's theory. Try and get the panel guys to sort it as it has to be their fault. If not, get your insurance company involved and let them do the threatening.

Not at all mate. Most windows that are broken are the front ones, so people then can produce aftermarket ones and in big numbers so the price comes down. Go find a wreck and get an auto glazier to take it out and put in into yours on the spot.

I had exactly the same thing happen in a Sigma. I near crapped myself. I thought someone had shot the car. I replaced the rear window but never hooked up the wires again. I thought it may have been a relay problem or something!! But then again, as an auto electrician, I would make a good pastry cook.

Possibly the guy wired the heater cable to the antenna in the glass instead of to the heater.

The heater would be resistive, the antenna wouldn't, so it would act like a short circuit, draw a lot of current, get very hot and cause the burning smell and glass detonation.

But that's just a guess and I could well be wrong.

Probably a good guess Pen - I'd say most panelbeaters wouldn't know the aerial and the demister are both on the glass.

Like I said a, short introduced by the panelbeater

, but yeah Peter, that's a good explanation of the short.

Hope, my glass is all intact. I just like solving why something might have happened. :-)

However, thinking back, my car got shunted up the rear a while back and they had the rear glass out to cut/replace the left hand rear quarter panel. When I got the car back, the radio was very susceptible to bumps and the heater element didn't work. The repairer checked and said they didn't hook the earth up properly, so it sounds like the earth is common. From that, it might not be too hard to then put the wrong lead onto the wrong clip unless they are different sizes or have obvious markings.

Update:

Took the car back to panel beaters, who discovered they had wired the demister incorrectly.

They gave me $500 and appolagized.

I then took my car to a wrecker, bought a rear glass for $300 and got it fit and resealed for $120. (this time I left the demister disconnected)

Job done but a big WTF ...

It's caused by the window not being properly insulated from the body, usually by re-using the old rubbers instead of fitting new ones. The conductive tracks go close enough to the edge that they will short to the body and in that case it is possible for only the bottom row of the heater on one side only, i.e. less than half the width of the window, to get the full 14 odd volts across it. This results in that section of the heater getting white hot rather quickly and the window doesn't like that.
The side of the window on which this occurs depends upon which way round the two wires are connected to it.
The burning smell is a combination of the heater element section and hot glass as well as the insulation of the wire carrying +12V and anything it came in contact with in the last couple of hundred millimeters of its' length. Possibly some vapourised fuse particles too.
