I've done it many times now with three cars and a motorbike. One car from S.A., one from Vic and one from Queensland. You'd need to have the car inspected for a blue slip, so as long as it's in reasonable condition and mechanically roadworthy, it just a matter of taking some happy pills before you subject yourself to your local RTA office with all the relevant paperwork (previous certificate of rego, bill of sale, green slip etc etc).
The most painful one for me was when I lived on the South Coast and went to Queensland to buy a turbo diesel 4x4. I ended up buying a Nissan Terrano that the local garage had no data to complete the blue slip. They told me I would need to have it weighed!! - Had to travel 45 min north to the local abatoir, which was the closest weighbridge.
The RTA has a clause somewhere about grey imports and the possibility of an additional inspection to verify it's VIN / compliance etc. For me, it was just a matter of organising green and blue slips. Oh, and welcome to the club! :-)

You guys must've had it easy then! When I tried to register my newly imported TT, the RTA in Fairfield made me stand there for at least 2 hours! The lady at the counter argued with me that I had insufficient paperwork, blah blah blah. After calling up the RTA Technical Support Line then letting them speak with the lady at the counter all issues were solved. Still, it was all good til I got to the RTA. Just make sure you have everything mate, like Consumer Information Notice, proof of purchase, proof of identity, green slip and blue slip.

I bought my 91 TT from VIC and had to chase the guy up that I bought it off because i had to get a previous rego paper. Also had to get a weight certificate. And depending whether it is privately imported you may have to go through engineering cr@p.
When you look at the soarer you want look at the compliance plate under the bonnet on the drivers side and then call this number 1300137302 its the NSW RTA Tech enquires. They will ask you what colour it is and the compliance number and the VIN number and stuff like that and tell you what process you must go through to register it. The compliance plate colour I had was green and that meant it had been complied through an import dealer otherwise if its privately imported you need the compliance papers.
This number is only for tradespersons so you have to act like your roadworthying the car.
I hope that helps you out a little, I'd hate to see someone else have to go what I went through.
