Mostly the allies, though you can't blame the poms as they had to go it alone for quite a while, and did bloody well to resist.

Technically, it's spelled POME. And stands for 'Prisoner of Mother England' although some have argued that it stands for 'Prisoner of her Majesty's Empire'. The phrase was coined by Aussies and Kiwi's as a slang word for British migrants that settled in Australia. The full term is actually "Ten Pound POME's" as at that time, £10 was the cost of a ticket on the boat to Australia

You're almost right Sam, almost:

[Q] From Rosemary Wetherall: “Is pom short for Port of Melbourne (where the ships docked), Prisoners Of her Majesty, as they were convict ships, or did we all really look like a cargo of pomegranates when we caught the sun? Or is it simply rhyming slang for immigrant?”

[A] You’ve done a great job of listing many of the explanations that one comes across for the origin of this Australian term for British immigrants. You could have added a possible derivation from the common naval slang term for Portsmouth, Pompey, or from pommes de terres for potatoes, much eaten by British troops in World War One, or an abbreviation for Permit of Migration. All of them except your last two, I have to tell you, are folk etymology (which, for some reason I’ve never understood, loves to invent origins based on acronyms).

Part of the reason for all these theories growing up is that there was for decades much doubt over the true origin of the expression, with various Oxford dictionaries, for example, continuing to say that there is no firm evidence for the pomegranate theory. That origin was described by D H Lawrence in his Kangaroo of 1923: “Pommy is supposed to be short for pomegranate. Pomegranate, pronounced invariably pommygranate, is a near enough rhyme to immigrant, in a naturally rhyming country. Furthermore, immigrants are known in their first months, before their blood "thins down", by their round and ruddy cheeks. So we are told. You will note that he had to explain the pronunciation that we would now take to be the usual one: in standard English it used not to have the first “e” sounded, with pome often rhyming with home.

It is now pretty well accepted that the pomegranate theory is close to the truth, though there’s a slight twist to take note of. H J Rumsey wrote about it in 1920 in the introduction to his book The Pommies, or New Chums in Australia. He suggested that the word began life on the wharves in Melbourne as a form of rhyming slang. An immigrant was at first called a Jimmy Grant (was there perhaps a famous real person by that name around at the time?), but over time this shifted to Pommy Grant, perhaps as a reference to pomegranate, because the new chums did burn in the sun. Later pommy became a word on its own and was frequently abbreviated still further. The pomegranate theory was also given some years earlier in The Anzac Book of 1916.

Whatever your beliefs about this one, what seems to be true is that the term is not especially old, dating from the end of the nineteenth century at the earliest, certainly not so far back as convict ship days.

So the original term is POMEGRANATE. Since all pommys looked like pomegranates when exposed to the sun

These are all theories, Daniel. No one can actually prove where the term came from.

"Another theory is that POM is a shortened acronym of Prisoner of His/Her Majesty (POHM). As many of Australia's first settlers were convicts, sentenced to transportation, this theory holds that upon arrival in the country they would be given a uniform with POHM emblazoned on the back, and that convicts with an extended stay on Australian soil would no longer have to wear the shirt and would often refer to newer entrants into the country as "Pohmmys". Other suggestions hold that POM is a different acronym, such as "Prisoner of Mother England" or "Port of Melbourne".

I think the whole looking-like-a-pomegranate theory is the most ridiculous and far fetched story of them all.

I think you really need a proper history lesson there Samantha! No pom soldier has ever crossed borders over to Poland to defend it, if anything, a heap of Polish troops and air force pilots made a trip over to England to fight for yous! Also, who has really broken the Enigma code??? Up to around year 2000 the English claimed they did, however only recently they admitted it was the Polish engineers that have cracked the code actually, and not them. The English have taken the credit for it for the past 50 years though, took a bit of work by Polish diplomats to ask the poms not to take credit for our work thanks. This made a huge difference as you may know, as prior to that the U-boats made an absolute killing out of all the supply ships heading to the pom island... without which Adolf would have surely made it to the shore for a cuppa tea.
Winning WW2 was a joint effort on behalf of all the allied forces, and not just the poms.

On D-Day in 1944 the Allied Powers (mainly UK, USA and Canada) invaded (German-held) Normandy and after two months, destroyed the German defense completely. These are the same Germans which invaded Poland in 1939. Within a month Poland had fallen. The same Germans who went onto set up Concentration Camps and slaughtered millions of Polish jews, gypsies, cripples, liberalists and homosexuals, to name but a few.

I've read in a book once that homosexuality actually first originated in Britain... I'll post a link when I find it. Gypsies come from Hungary not Poland. Jews don't come from Poland, they are friggin everywhere... These are just three examples of the factually incorrect stuff you have so far written Sam.

Sam... the war lasted for 6 years! Not just one farken D-day! And never mind that Poland was invaded first out of all the countries full on in the middle of the night while the rest of the countries actually had plenty of notice there'll be an all round war (because of the Poland invasion)...

Here's something to consider: Imagine a fight between to guys, both are smashing the crap out of each other for a while (say 6 years), and both getting weaker and weaker, one is weaker than the other so he falls to the ground, the other guy is still standing but is already weak. Then a third guy comes and knocks that guy to the ground. Whoa, he won the fight, sure the other guy did most of the damage to him, but the third guy threw the last punch! See what's wrong with just focusing on the end rather than the full story... US and Canada only got involved in 1944, that's 5 years after the war first started, and they have not been directly attacked like the rest of the European countries, so they have not been weakened in any way (just like the third guy in my scenario above) Good thing they got involved, I'm not denying that, BUT... you can't just take a simplistic view like you just have on something like this Sam, it's a lot more complex.

P.S. Poland didn't fall within a month, certain areas of Poland were occupied though...
