$800 sounds like a mild steel exhaust. I was told it wouldn't last long on a V8 Soarer, couple of years at best. $1600 is probably a Stainless Cat Back.
I paid $1650 for a 2 1/4" Twin Cat back with no Cross pipe, Carline in Ozzie Park. Love the Sound

i tried the one in malaga it didnt really seem like he wanted my buisness really, i will give them another go but yeh, carline in balcatta quoted for basically the whole exhaust except the extractors with the 2 down pipes into a single 3 inch with a high flow cat the branching back out into 2 2.5 inch pipes with cannons

Well i can safely say the guy that did my exhaust in Osborne park did a good job. He also was pretty thorough in asking questions on how I wanted it to sound etc etc.
He also seemed to know the 1UZ's really well, whilst he said he'd mainly done customs for engine swaps although he'd done a few soarer's as well.
I also had one of my pipes get a small split (factory pipe, not new pipe work) which he repaired for nothing.
Couldn't be happier with the service/quality of work and far better then some of the prices I got around here.

Be weary when shopping around; there are many stories of people paying for stainless and receiving mild steel with some spray on chrome =P

I just got a quote from Exhaust World / Carline Mufflers, Northbridge. Cat back to tips $660 for a dual mild steel system and quality stainless cannons.

Guys, I spoke to the bloke in Greenwood and was quoted $1100 for cat back with high flow cat into 2 1/2" stainless pipes into twin cannon. Except trying to book my car in there was a pain in the butt so i went to Carline in Malaga who did me a 2 1/2 with 3" high flow cat and 3" down pipe for 1100 and booking in was easy. He also arranged with Trevs diff to get my Torsen in the same day and they drove the car back and foward to get it all done. The only thing he could improve on is using stainless steel pipes, but other than that no complaints. Great sound and you will deffinately notice a massive improvment in performance, especially if you have BFI or a pod filter

Too many factors to say, you really wont know until you hear the sound.
Personally for me, a 'quality' muffler will set you back a minimum of $200, and possibly up to $300. A decent cat is in the order of $150 for normal, $250 for highflow.
So there you are up to around $600 before you start talking labour, piping, flanges, y-pipes, resonator, etc. Cost goes up for stainless instead mild steel. Cost goes up again for mandrel instead of press bent.
Generally speaking with exhaust you get what you pay for. Sure it can vary a bit from shop to shop, but its not a huge amount. Also generally speaking the cheaper the muffler, the more it drones, and the worse it sounds.
Quotes can also blow out too (generally not on exhausts, but it can for IC piping). I had a friend quoted about $1600 to get zorst and IC piping done from a shop, and the second quote was about $900 for the same job. So the second shop was given the work, and by the time the job was done, I think he was up to about $1500ish.
