I'll see you at Racewars bitch. I bet a couple of SR20 engines would pull a premium. You need more naaaaws or you will blow the welds on the intake loser.

Yeah that is a good thing, the adaptor kits for car stereos, that basically stems from the market power Apple has, so yeah, that's one good benefit. The rest of the accessories, like one of those teeny weenie stereo sets which you plug in your ipod on top of it or whatever, I just wouldn't bother about anyway, having just splurged on $6K fully sick home speakers and amp

I'm having a beer in an hour, only 4pm here in WA at the moment.

You'd better learn how to double clutch first, and not granny shift like you do... plus you got enough NAWS in there to blow yourself up loser!

I chuckled when Daniel made his first provocative post, and expected to be entertained by a few responses. It is not the first time he has posted his view. Even so, I was surprised at the number of responses although some addressed the fact he was conflating a straw man with his own requirements. For my part I do not recall anyone claiming iPod was "the best" (it merely serves every musical and operational need I personally require of it) although, come to think of it, are we seeing an argument that Features = Excellence? This would be more a view for the masses than the elites . In any case, the view that something is a fashion statement seems invariably to be held by those who do not have it.

I'm going to get in to the game of flogging the dead horse here.

One thing to remember with the iPod is that it essentially is responsible for where portable media and audio players are today.

Dont get me wrong, if Apple didnt do something then someone else would have and we would probably be in the same place, but the fact remains that Apple came first with it's iPod as something marketable.

Now i dont know what any of the new iPods are like (anything more recent than 4th gen which is what i have) but when i got my 4th gen its audio processor and amplifier was superior than any other consumer mp3 player on the market at the time.
Remember, this is going back 3 years now when the tech wasnt as common as it is these days.

As for the claims that the iPod is inferior because it doesnt have a range of different features built in like radio capabilities, recording, etc etc.. dont make this sort of judgement call until you have spent some time in a well developed asian city.
After coming back from Japan (im in Singapore atm) and seeing how people live in Tokyo i can tell you that having a base model iPod type device which you then buy additional bits and pieces you plug in makes it a very intelligent device.
One thing to remember as well that electronics are on a more consumer orientated price level in Japan; ie cheaper (but not a whole lot cheaper).

Another good example on how we dont get to experience things to their fullest tech wise in Aus is that as soon as i turned my phone (Nokia 6288) on in Tokyo with a Japan based sim card, it started doing things that i never even knew it could do; it turned into a motherfsking transformer!!!

Dont judge a book by it's cover in the tech world; perhaps there are 'better' devices in the portable media market than what Apple has on offer at the moment from a feature or 'luxury' point of view, but remember the device wasnt made with the Aussie market in mind. EVER. Nothing electronics wise is made with the Aussie market in mind. EVER. We just get the left overs from USA and Japan.

Can you verify it? When I bought mine two years ago, most audiophile reviews were of a rather different view :-)

You just contradicted yourself there champ :-) So an iPod is a 'very intelligent' device because you can plug in all those optional features that are available standard in-built on other players?? Righto...

And the point to this is? Haha, of course there are better things than iPod, even locally, which is what I have been trying to tell you. You don't need to look abroad all the way to Japan to find better mp3 players than ipod. :-)

Thanks Mel, too late now anyway haha, I've still managed to save some cash on my products though. My Pioneer VSX 1016V amp I got from an SC member working in MYER at basically cost price (cheers Cam!) and I've spent about half an hour haggling with a salesman at another store to reduce my Yamaha EF series speakers, got a good deal there also :-) Amp is not exactly top of the range, but has good features like HDMI, auto MCAAC set-up, stacks of various inputs and outputs and so on, enough for my needs. Speakers are awesome though! Probably the most important in any sound system really...

Battery life - When I was still catchin' a bus to work each day, I used it all the time. A total of over an hour and a half each day spent on the bus, plus my daily jog session for about half an hour to an hour. I only had to recharge it once a month, if not every 5 weeks. Let's do the calcs: 2.5 hours times 5, times 4 = very much 50 hours. Not including weekend use. Brochure stated 48 hours. Can yours consistently do that? No? Doh! One down, 4 to go.

What you smoking Daniel? I presume you have an iAudio X5? Even the X5L has only 35 hours of battery life. That is better than a Ipod Video though, which is only 20 hours.

Mine is the X5L and I am serious, well over 40 hours of usage, maybe not exactly 50 but close, although now the thing is year and a half old so battery has deteriorated a little bit as they all do, but it still pulls just under 40 hours play time. It just keeps on playing and playing...
