i wish he'd interview me for a job, i'd finally get a decent one ;)

actually i've been trying to convince his bosses that he needs a PA, its a lot harder to come up with arguments when he's a tradey, but i'm still trying

and if anyone has the same trust factors as my family, no i'm not pregnant, i've got 5 sisters and a mother so i've been asked 6 times already

now all i gotta do is plan a wedding, sell a kidney to pay for a wedding, and work out suitable wedding cars, cause if i went down the supras and soarers path my dad would want to drive at least one of them and mum gets upset when he does

I've never understood couples who spend $40,000 on a wedding and then complain they don't have the dough for a house???
Sounds like you've got it sorted Steph.

My car got a 100k service done today, nothing too bad other than the front bushes need doing and the rear brakes are on the way out. Will replace these and hopefully get another few faithful kilometres out of the car. :-)

LOL! Luke, do you realise how much weddings cost nowadays? The average (nice) wedding costs 30-40K. 99% of nice venues have a minimum number of guests, usually it happens to be 100, some say 150.

Food and beverage packages start at around 80 bucks per person for simple cheap stuff, up to 150 or 200... usually 100 bucks is alright food and drinks. That's already 10 to 15K cutting into your budget.

Venue hire, 500-1000.

Wedding dress, 3000

Bridesmaid dresses, say 3 X 400 bucks

Wedding bands, say 3K as well (we won't include he cost of the engagement ring)

Limos, under a grand

Wedding cake, minimum 800 bucks, up to couple of grand

Photographer, 3K minimum if you want quality

Video, 1K

Church and priest (if you're into that), about a grand

Plus various other things like flowers, DJ/band, chair coverings (surprisingly some venues charge extra for that, around 3-5 bucks per seat), plus misc things, and there's plenty of them out there, go to any bridal expo show whatver, all those extra 'minor' details add up to a fortune.

And the scariest part of it is, 30-40K you will only get an nice average wedding. Few friends of mine got married already. One of them spent 125K on his wedding (parents are loaded). It was absolutely beautiful. Another spent the average 30-40K it was nice, classy, I'd be happy with that myself. Then another spent probably 10 or 15K and mate it was a shocker, it just screamed cheap from every direction, it was downright embarassing...

But yeah, the $$$$ almost put you off from getting married hey! HAHA.

So Steph, when's the big date??

80 is a nice number, you just need to look harder if you want to do it with less, 3 years of working as an event planner (amongst other things) is proving to be very useful about now :-)

if the venue you want is going to charge you venue hire on top of food costs then you are being ripped off, and when you point this out to most places they will drop it altogether. besides, winter wedding = much cheaper

dont know who you've been talking to, but catholics aint even allowed to charge AT ALL. having said this a token payment of about $200 and leaving some of the flowers behind is appreciated. and you gotta invite the priest to the wedding, who will then promptly drink the place dry so dont go for a tab. In my case i'm going to be forcing certain nurses coming to make sure that one of the priest's lives through the ceremony given that he's 93 and not doing so well anymore

july next year some time ish, i need it to be cold because of how big and heavy and old fashioned the dress is.

for 30k i'll have the wedding and honeymoon sorted, it can be done without looking cheap but its a LOT of hard work and you really need to know what you are doing and what you want.

mind you if i went domestic for the honeymoon instead of overseas, and took the wedding out of perth then i could have a very nice wedding for around 15k, but there is still no way to get my dress made cheaply short of moving to thailand for 3 months and i haven't ruled that out yet!!

Yeah it depends on the venue and I suppose time of the year, but most did want to charge extra. There are some venues that are so popular, you gotta book them many many months in advance, and people will pay for venue hire still. The place I chose for mine is Tawarri in Dalkeith. I'm still trying ot pick whether I should arrive by limo or boat

Stephanie Loftus wrote on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 05:13 am:

Yeah, if you actually personally know a good photographer that can do it for that much then awesome. But photographer is really the one area where it really shows if you have been cheap or not lol! You can actually tell just by looking at the photos. There are some brilliant wedding photographers in Perth, the sorts of shots they take is amazing. Video on the other and, who cares, no need to splurge on that. The way I thought of it, you can try to save on anything else, but at the end of the day, after the weddig is over, you are left with just your memories, nice photos you can be proud of, and of course... a nagging wife, or so I was told

Oh, I dunno, never been married before haha. Just that when I was booking places, I had to pay for hiring the church about 400 bucks (I chose St Michael the Archangel chapel in Leederville, it's got beautiful gardens for photos and stuff) and I had to bring my own priest. Usually you give them something (say 200-400 bucks, I dunno). I haven't heard of one priest coming to a wedding, unless you're friends with them. But then you just pay for their meal, not pay them for their attendance.

thats where one of my sisters got married. if you're going down the seafood buffet idea be aware that is is rather pungent and if anybody is not feeling well the table hard up against the buffet is a bad place for them, i spent most of the night throwing up from it

I used to perform at st michaels with the state girls choir at easter every year, people even paid to hear me sing. if you want a girls choir to sing during your ceremony ring st brigids, they hire out their best 30singers for f'ck all.

for protestant weddings you pay the minister to be there and you pay the church to use it

for catholic weddings you donate money to the church and thats it, you dont pay for the priest ever (its not canon and he cant keep the money anyways) but you are always expected to invite him to the reception, its up to him to decline. remember the guy is not paid to marry you off by his bosses, its all part of the job, so a meal is considered appropriate. if you are completely against having the biggest p'sstank you can find there getting drunk and rowdy (aka the priest) then a nice bottle of port is considered ok

the amount of money you donate is in relation to if its your parish or not. if it is and you go to mass there regularly and give some form of tithe you dont have to donate very much, if you're borrowing someone else's church then you should donate a bit more for the loan. because its st michaels i'd suggest finding out what the least amount of money you can give is and then go down that path. its the home of the catholic education offices which is why it is BYO priest, and if you knew about that lot you wouldn't care how pretty it is you wouldn't go, but you dont so its all good. but just remember the money given there doesn't go to anybody but management, the community's only benefit is that they can drive past a pretty building sometimes

ps when's the wedding?

Yeah, it would be a donation, the priest does not ask to be paid or anything. But I don't expect the bloke to turn up and do things for free so yeah, either meal at the reception or some donation towards the church. That's what I meant. And I don't want to be cheap either, given the whole grand scheme of things.

the amount of money you donate is in relation to if its your parish or not. if it is and you go to mass there regularly and give some form of tithe you dont have to donate very much, if you're borrowing someone else's church then you should donate a bit more for the loan. because its st michaels i'd suggest finding out what the least amount of money you can give is and then go down that path

St Michael's actually asks for a specific amount of $$. Can't remember exactly how much, but around 400 bucks. That comes with some flowers and stuff as well.

ps when's the wedding?

We have it booked for 3rd of May this year, but I think we will delay it till next year, too much planning to do, plus other commitments and issues with timing and so on etc. I personally am not in a big rush so it's fine with me, more like a formality to me to be honest. I can tell you time runs hell quick though, it feels like I got engaged only yesterday haha.

Buying a house would be the most expensive day I reckon. I hope that will be beaten one day when I buy a private island somewhere in the pacific

Lots o bucks. Still, it's only the second most expensive day of your life (for the guy).

Nah, my fiance's father is footing most of the bill luckily. Apparently that's what happens traditionally. I better be loaded enough if I end up having daughters
