Now all they have to do is remove the points system and I'll be a happy man. In a country that has a points system those penalties doesn't really matter. You'd loose it anyway. 45kph over the limit is too much most places. If you want to do that you should go to the track.

| If you want to do that...go to the SA/NT border...no speed limit...happiness all the way. Porsche GT2 and Ferrari Challenge Stradalle and Lambo Gallardo hit 330km/h.

"45kph over the limit is too much most places." Not really benny, i'm sure you have gone down kissing point. Speed limit is 50 but you can easly get 100 without trying, no joke. You see little grandmas going 80! thank god were i live its full of old people, so not many cops ;)

The cop that told me about all this, said he and his mates were expecting there would be bitching about it, and they think the 45kph suspension is too tough.

Major stretches of the Sydney-Canberra highway are safe at 155+. They could at least raise the limit to 130 for which most of it was designed.

Over here in Ba Ba land it's 50kph OVER the limit for INSTANT loss of license, which, if you're talking our NZ wide open road limit of 100 kph, probably ain't to severe. But having said that, on a recent trip from New Plymouth to Auckland (4 hour drive at open road limit) we didn't see one single cop.....ANYWHERE!. So it's not unusual to be blitzed by some nong in a Porsche doing 160 - 170 kph, and doing so with impunity, as there ain't an awful lotta cops to go around over here

I wasn't really saying that 45kph over the limit was too much FOR THE ROAD. Just that it's too much to do 45kph more than anyone else. Also too much in a built-up area where kids could be running around. The problem with speed limits is that they're fixed. Some roads are safe at 100kph some times but quite unsafe at 70kph other times. It all depends on traffic (including pedestrians).

I agree about the relativity point Benny. A little-publicised study by the NSWRTA roughly ten years ago showed that your chances of an accident rose significantly if your speed differed from that of the surrounding traffic by 20% or more and was increasing at 10%. The point they were careful to make was that they were talking about 10-20% different not faster. When overtaking a string of cars I limit my speed and take what I can rather than raising absolute speed to take more and risking someone pulling out in front of you. Not that I have to do much of that these days, with freeways.

Hasnt the above 45K's over been in place for years? I got done back in 93/94 for flying past an unmarked cop car in a VH dunnydore that I was on my way to trade in on Pt Wakefield Rd. Was told then that due to my speed being much greater than 30kmh in excess of the limit (175 - 110 zone) it was going to be auto loss of license. After having a whinge and whine he ended up doing me for a number of offences that I hadnt commited but let me keep my license, just cost me a bucket (bout $800 from memory)

i think that giving the police powers like that is abit much. given the circumstances, it should or shouldnt be 'fair'. one instance that springs to mind in a magazine, this guy on a Suzi Hayabusa (spelling?) bike, overtook a truck or something and got done speeding in excess of like 160. went to court and convinced the judge that had he been going slower he would have been creamed by the truck, who hadnt seen him, or something along those lines. I had to speed, it wasnt safe to do the speed limit. AND HE GOT OFF!?!! where i live, cops LOVE picking on P platers and drivers in general. Giving them even more power to abuse is a bit in the wrong way. MY VIEW: if your always a dickhead in your car, you deserve to get caught. If you just drive 'spiritedly' once every now and then, a fine is enough. if you drive sensibly and rarely have a jolt, then its ok. its usually the dickheads who the rules are made up for, and the rest suffer. pricks.

That's when you get caught though, it all comes down to luck / where you speed really.

Even that's easy, Dan's 32 showed us all it had what it took to FLY past about 5 Soarers on a recent cruise... Although, the speed limit on that bit of road was 150kph, so you'll be safe hehe. |
