Ok my trans needs a LOT of work (It's done 270ks+!). It throws ETC code as soon as i hit overdrive, it shifts really early under wot, it clunks and shudders/jumps going into overdrive at part throttle, its driving me crazy.
So I plan on doing the following:
1.Get fluid flushed/filter changed
2.Get solenoids replaced
3.Get a shift kit fitted
4.Fit trans cooler
5.Have line pressure adjusted
Do you think this will have the trans back to fighting fit? as I plan on doing some drag racing.
Also a rough idea of cost would be great and recommendations of good workshops. As you may have gathered I know nothing about autos as my 20+ previous imports were all manual.

Apologies for long winded post but thought it'd be best to get all my pestering over with in one go ;)

How much do you plan on spending?

It may work out better for both you and your car if you buy a second hand box and fit a shift kit/cooler to that.

A second hand g'box can be found at KYP for $500 from what I last recall, which was a while ago.

What are your future plans modification wise ??? If your planning to do draggin you may as well bite the bullet now and get a built box from MV. ~ $3400 gets a box delivered to your door that will handle 700+ horsepower, will be fitted with a shift kit, high stall and will have all new filters, solenoids, clutch packs... EVERYTHING !

You should be able to find them even cheaper in the private ads.
Plenty of crappy old Soarers kicking around these days and plenty that have been wrecked.

You would financially be better off finding a second hand box than redoing your current one imo.

Brand new ones from Toyota were at $2000 when i was asking back in 2006 (My transmission carked it. Potentially clutch packs were the cause)

So its sounding like trans work is not especially cheap haha and i'll be looking for a second hand box to mod. My future mod plans aren't huge (yet) just the basics as funds allow (exhaust fmic injectors safc lsd) ideally id like 300rwhp. Is it a big job to swap out the old box for a new one?

Also getting some transmission upgrades.

1.Get fluid flushed/filter changed - $280 full auto flush and service
2.Get solenoids replaced -
3.Get a shift kit fitted - $558 - $100 cash back exchange basis. MV stage 1.5 shift kit and service kit.(gasket and filter)
4.Fit trans cooler - PWR cooler for $100
5.Have line pressure adjusted - Will this be needed after installing shift kit? Correct me if im wrong .

Coff! It's not a kick down cable, it's for adjusting the line pressure which affects how hard the gearbox changes, not when it changes.

Nickel, the correct setting for the LPS probably won't change, MV recommend to NOT tighten it up with a shift kit, as the kit already makes the changes harder.

Basically i was just saying that luke didnt need to do number 5 on his list if he was to do the shift kit. all good . Luke its really $448 because when you send them back your old valve body you get the $100 core deposit.

You dont really need a 1.5 stage. A 1 stage will be more than adequate if you are looking for quick shifts. Its a huge improvement over the stock setup, the 1.5 stage makes a lesser noticeable improvement over 1 stage.

I paid $330 delivered for my kit in 2006. Set aside $70 to put it on during a service and you should be set.

If you really want to put a trans cooler on then you can save a few bob by getting the radiator out of a Magna and using that instead.

Hehe, I knew it was something more sophisticated than that. Where do you adjust the line pressure? Is it inside or outside of the box? Shouldn't really fiddle around with it hey, might go bang.

Sorry for all the questions, but which one is it? 1 or 2? As 3 is the cruise control. I tighten both 1 and 2 and the only noticible difference is that the accelerator pedal feels more firm. This is what I thought was the kick down cable.

1 is the pressure cable.

You already have a shifkit, so you probably won't notice a huge difference, unless you loosened it right down..in which case it would probably feel like you dont have a shiftkit.

Sit in car, start engine. Without going anywhere, move the gear selector between Neutral, Drive, Neutral, Reverse. With the cable tighter, you can feel much more of a thump as it goes in to hear. The difference is probably more noticeable doing this than it is while driving the car.

Thanks for the info Peter and Matt. I'll have a play around with it next time at the motorplex to see if I can get any gains from my 1/4 mile times from it.
