Right, here's the situation, I own a factory Manual TT, and the other day i was driving down Leach HWY, shifted up a gear, and found that although my revs were still going up, I wasn't gaining any forward momentum. It wasn't until I took my foot off the accelerator and re clutched that I could actually continue to move forwards.

When I stopped my car at the video store and got out, there was a faint smell similar to that caused by a radio frying itself. I asked a mate and he reckons that my clutch slipped (I'm not much of a mech head) It doesn't happen too often, but this is the second time in the last 2 months.

So the big question is, Is my mate right, and if he is, how soon will i need to replace the clutch and what should i replace it with?

At the moment my car is stock, but i plan on modding the exhaust, Intake and changing that bloody restrictive air box over. From what I've heard this will cause a significant jump in power, and i want something that can handle this, plus any other mods i do in the future, but nothing too hardcore that I wind up broke after purchase.

Note, I'm not going to drag or race it. I just want a bit more balls to the car, KW fever has hit me hard

Just put a stock clutch back in, it will handle a fairly large increase in power without any issues.

It does sound like you clutch is slipping. Most likely the pressure plate will be fine and you will only need to replace the clutch plate itself.

if it only just recently slipped, then you could probably get away with driving for a couple more months, just not at full throttle.

does sound like the clutch, and you might aswell go the next step up and get a heavy duty clutch.

Beg to differ, dont keep driving! If you do you'll end up spotting the pressure plated and having to pay to get it machined. Get yourself a cluch kit + mechanic now and save your car and pocket an extra day on the hoist.

^^ agree with Doran. If it really is slipping, get it done ASAP. Hairy moments at intersections also.

Go for something aftermarket if you are going to do mods later down the track, so you'll have more grip, tell your mechanic how you want it and if he has a clue, will sort you out with the right gear.

if you plan on having greater than 220 rwkw, that is 80 rwkw more than stock, then go aftermarket.

If you replace it now the clutch disc will cost you about $255 from Toyota since they caught on to us buying 7m clutches and raised the price on all the interchangeable ones.
Btw to resurface a pull type pressure plate i was quoted $420 , when the new price was $480. I bought a good condition second hand one instead,

I have a non oem disc here that looks new, fits the box and will part with it for $100. Obviously i prefer the oem as i know how well it performs.
