Hey mate i am probably going to do myself out of a sale here but i have started pulling the heads of the 1uz i am striping and have found 2 welch (water gallery) plugs at the back of each head hidden behind the wiring looms (even with the motor on the floor i did not see them till i started stripping bits off). These are a couple of dollar a plug steel plug about the size of a 20 cent piece that are a common problem for leakage in a lot of engines. The down side is to get to these you are either going to have to pull the motor & trans out or the heads off. Having done heads in the car once and having pulled several motors out I would not even consider doing the job in the car I would be pulling engine box and wiring out and doing it on the floor. Even if its not the welch plug and you still have to pull the heads off its going to be 500% easier with the engine out. From what you are describing i would guess that it has either blown a plug out (if a major leak started suddenly) or corroded the plug out. I always replace the plugs with brass so they will never corrode again. Hope this helps let me know if you have any other questions about r&r as i have pulled 2 v8 and 3tt motors in and out in the last few weeks ( I am starting to see soarer engine bays in my sleep)

the easiest way is to pull motor and trans as a unit disconnect wiring from the ecu and loom in passenger foot well and pull it through the fire wall after unbolting the plate near the heater tap and leave the a/c compressor and power steer pump bolted to the engine just drop the gas and have it recharged later you will also have to remove the main feed wire at the back of the altenator. the engine and trans wiring will all come as one big lump with the motor. as a mechanic i would say these are fairly easy to r&r but to a novice they look pretty ugly. to try and to make you feel better after having done a few of these now if i had a choice between pulling a v8 soarer motor or a v6 commodore motor out i would take the soarer without even thinking twice. also the bonnets weigh a ton so i would suggest having three people there when trying to pull it off and be very careful with the 12mm studs on the bonnet struts they round off extremely easily
