The card skimming has occurred in WA. Please forward on so that the WA public (and others coming to WA) are aware!!
Skimmers will steal your card details and withdraw all your money. It is messed up! I last heard it was confirmed at the Maddington McDonalds but this article suggests that any Maccas is suspect.

Yeah it was again on the news tonight about it, they were saying do not use eftpos at any macdonalds drive thru's and apparently over 3,500 reported cases in Perth alone so far worth $2million plus i think. That's totally F'd up! My brother told me this arvo one of his workmates wife used it in a Mc D's drive thru last week and they were fleeced 3 grand.

as far as i know the eftpos machines at maccas, which are most likely ANZ provided equipment, dont encrypt the outgoing information well enough, which is then intercepted and new cards are printed out and used elsewhere. my card was used in the maccas in wa and then a few hours later it appeared in NSW at an atm, withdrawing everything i had in that account, which luckily wasnt a lot.

Scary
There was a crowd in NZ a couple of years back fitting card readers over the top of ATM card entry slots, and mounting cameras near by to watch pin entry, so they could then duplicate the card and withdraw cash later on, the banks responded by fitting cowling things over the ATM card slots which seemed to sort it out - that and the cops catching quite a few of the culprits (well done, for a change NZ police!) but this is a new one!

The problem is when the bank goes and puts something over their reader, you end up being stupidly anal as you see there's now a weird fitting over the entrance and you can't tell if its a skimmer or real

It seems to me the risk of getting mugged is no worse than the risk of getting skimmed or defrauded, and probably the balance has always been much the same. Anyone remember cheque fraud? Muggings are more injurious personally than a good solid skimming though.

On the news the other night they were trying to tell a sob story about a single mother of 2 who had her account emptied (over $5k) after using an atm and as heartless as this may sound I honestly had no sympathy for her. Why does a single mother of 2 have her daily bank limit over $5k in the first place ????? sorry, but I have no sympathy for stupidity. I've always had a $500 (the lowest it can go) on all my accounts and always keep my money in an account that's not linked to a card. Unless your a business your daily withdrawl limit should never be over a grand.
I was having a debate with a girl at work over it and she basically said that people need to make large transactions all the time and it's too much of an inconvenience having to leave work early or use up a lunch break going to the bank. I said to her "alright, tell me how much more of an inconvenience it would be if you had your account emptied and no money cause you were too lazy to go stand in a line to get your money out safely?" in which she had nothing to say.
There are so many thing's you can do to protect yourself from this but some people are chosing to do nothing and are usually the ones that cop it. We had 4 guy's at work have their accounts raided last week. One of the guy's was pissed cause he had $1300 taken which he was saving for his trip to thailand... I'm sorry... ever heard of a SAVINGS account ????
I guess I feel strongly about this because I work with money and know many ways to be protected from this but. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone but if some people are just too careless maybe they need to be taught a lesson ?

Recently everyone over here (dairys, fast food, you name it) was forced to comply with some new security format that made a lot of them have to throw their equipment out and buy new ones. I'm hoping that means we have some kind of protection from this kind of scam here in NZ, but even so I'm glad I have a $800 limit on my card.

I find a better way of managing money through restrictions is to leave the withdrawl limit high (so that the option is always there in a pinch without a 5 work day turnaround on a change) but have the only account accessible via card or transferring money to other accounts always low on funds (say $500 as you suggested).
Get a couple of purely online accounts which usually net no fees because you cannot withdraw money on them directly which theoretically means minimal costs for the bank.
That way if you ever need more than $500 on one day (very possible if you have ever done a trip through the Swan Valley or Margs hunting for wine =P ) you dont have to rely on bank locations and opening times.
Convenience is a bitch when there is no convenience.
