Kyle Wathen wrote on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 - 09:05 pm:Just browsing VSI #8 under Vehicle Standards Information on the Vicroads link, they could quite easily do you for the wing and neons under points 16 & 17.
The wing fits in another catagory where it has to be in the limits and it is. It cant be 150mm wider than the car and its not so its legal. (It's 130mm) (I've already been tried by this and again no fines) As for the neons there are no laws against them. The only law is the colours. Cant be red on the front or white on the back. If you want blue, green, purple, orange, gold, aqua, or whatever then you can. All those rules say about lights that are suppose to be there(EG; headlights and turning lights), nothing about extra lights like underbody neons or internal neons. |

Well, maybe but its still legal to have whatever colour lights inside the car as you want. I highly doubt a FSG Soarer will ever be fined for "impersonating a police car". It's just a joke to the courts and will be thrown out. |

Rik I know for a fact cars get prosecuted for this. I've put in the paper work on a few. (red/blue inner neons) Need you help though, I'm trying to find the legislation that says it is ok to have lights under your car. The closest I can kind find is "Lights not to be used to dazzle other road users" .. which is purely the discretion of an Police member

Sorry reread what you had to say and you are argueing that there is no legislation around this so it is not illegal right? I'm gonna make some phone calls.

I called a mate in TMU .. the answer to the issue on external lights is.... Perfectly legal, provided these facts. No RED, WHITE or BLUE. You can not see the globe itself. You can only see the REFLECTED LIGHT onto the ground.

Great work Jol! I've been trying to find this out for ages and could never get a straight answer. My mate used to have some on his EVO. He got pulled over by a cop once, only to tell him he thinks it looks good.

The laws say no red on front, no white on back and in Victoria you can have any other colour you like so blue is ok in Vic. QLD you cant have blue. As for the dazzle it comes down to the judge as I would take it all the way to court. As there is a neon called dazzle I would argue as I dont have those neons in my car. As the colour is constant, not flashing, not fading, not changing then how can it be classed as dazzling. As for the red/blue inside neons I would also take that to court as there is no law about the colour of neons inside the car. As there is no law you cant fine people for it. Inside my car I have blue and UV neons. Outside I have multi-colour but I choose 1 colour and drive with that colour on. Usually aqua as its the brightest. I use to have really bright blue neons that lit up trees and never was pulled over when I had those ones. They were always on when I had them. I found out this law when I got my first neons nearly 7 years ago. the shop gave me a photocopy of the laws but I never knew where it was from but everytime a cop tries anything I show him and he leaves me alone as thats the law and he cant fine me for something thats legal.

Rik I agree with everything you said except the Blue externals. Only reason I disagree is because I spoke directly to the TMU themselves. Whether they are right or wrong is beside the point, I know these coppers and if they think its sus then they will find a way to pinp you for it. Anyway, I was thinking Hot Pink under car - I know it's a little girly, but done right it recon it would look sweet as.

I was going to get pink to start with as its the brightest of all the colours and it stands out the most. a White Soarer with pink neons would also look good. (I got a white one) but I went for blue. Look at the movie 2 Fast 2 Furious. The pink neons outglow the others. Cops are pricks. They will try but when you say you will take them to court then they usually back off. The last time I did that at a cop I was yelling at him and he backed off, not me. I was ready to have him charged for harassment.

Rik, Can i have a scanned copy of doc you got given witht he las regarding lighting. I wanan pass it by TMU and make sure it is still legit. Thing is law of averages says if its a rice cracker, has lights, looks expensive the person driving most likely has something sus about the car or using it for no good. You do know I am a police analyst yeah? Also driving around on the week with my 7 year old in the car I was pointing out the two types of Soarers. Type one: stock rims, unwashed, not lowered, no tint. Type two: Larger rims, Clean car, lowered, nice tint. One of these types waves to you, the other doesn't.

Quite often the police themselves don't know the letter of the law. And I doubt many know the vehicle modification guidelines and this and that. I was once told I'm going to have to sticker you for them wheels. BS I called it and I have the guidelines here in the glovebox, needless to say no sticker but the dogs reported me to the EPA for excessive noise. It passed! Jol the clean car with nice wheels screams drug dealer or terroist to me. I mean who in this country can affort a 6k car and keep it clean and tidy. The unwashed worn out stocker on bald tyres with the rust unrepaired accident damage and exhaust leak screams Aussie battler, let's just leave him alone.

My car is tint, looks lowered, wing, dirty with stock wheels and accident damage so where do I fit in? I use to wave but 1 out of 50 wave back so I don't bother anymore unless they wave first. The thing I got is a fax copy and its about 6 years old so I doubt its readable now. Wasn't the last time I looked at it but in the dark it still works against the cops. I did read the same thing from the VicRoads site so its there somewhere. Cant remember where... Police analyst? Whats that? Don't you know the cops these days don't know the laws. They guess and usually guess wrong. A court knows the laws and as I've researched and found where my car is legal in the laws the cops cant touch me. Also My car is Regged in QLD and that's way too much of a hassle for the cops, that's another reason I'm left alone.

Rik - an op member is unlikely to know the ins and out of transport laws, a TMU member will though. It all comes down to specialities. Peter: Amen! - still crook though ..wish I was pissed at the keyboard!

If a cop doesn't know the laws then how can they fine people with breaking them? They should go learn the laws they want to fine people for. Even the TMU doesn't know the laws. The cop I use to fight with he didn't know till I told him. BTW he was in the TMU

Rik - truthfully its because the police don't write the rules they try and enforce them to the best of there knowledge. I don't want to defend cops (seems I always am). I recon the TMU overall knows a lot about cars .. but when it comes down to certain areas (i.e. imports). Rik... pm me his name if you would be so kind .. i'm curious to see if i know him

I don't know his name. All I know about him is he's left the force now. He use to be the a-hole from Knox. The fat TMU cop. Last I heard is he had lots of complaints against him as he booked everyone for the smallest thing and I wasn't the only one that proved him wrong. His replacement tried to get me for the wing till he saw the QLD plates then he left in a huff as I again proved him wrong. That was about 4 months ago. Still waiting to see him again. The next time I wont be as nice. I found a few more laws they wont like me to know. http://www.trafficlaw.com.au/your.rights.html#silence

Know had a clean up recently, they are also the ones i called to confirm the legalities of under car light... who knows .. maybe the bloke i spoke too (who said it was kosher) is someone that you've had a run in with and he learnt his lesson .. life is funny like that

Probably. the neons laws that Knox knows I told them. hehehe. I've called 3 times trying to confirm the laws and each time get a different cop and all didn't know. So I told them and they agreed it sounds about right. That was about 6 years ago so I guess its the law now. Knox has been needing a cleanup for a while. The cops here are crap. In the last 6 years (Since I've had the Soarer) I've been pulled over about 8 times all without ever getting a fine. I call it harassment more than anything. It's only 8 I know but if I was doing nothing wrong then why are they pulling me over? The only good cop I know the name of at Knox is Hallet. (I think that's how you spell it?) He's nice to me and I've helped him out so I'm on his good side.

That ain't dirty. I don't have a garage to keep mine in anymore so it gets covered in crap and I haven't cleaned it for months now. It's so dirty if I parked it in front of a pile of dirt it would blend in. It's suppose to be white but I'm not sure atm...
