Definitely a few too many. It doubles points on all speeding offences, and adds another point to all other driving offences.

What road Tim? Curious to know if it was a 'real' 60 zone or one like Anzac Parade, or one of those roadwork stretches where they bring the limit down to 60 or 40 300 metres before the place where nothing is happening anyway.

Bad luck,

In Melbourne, late at night through the reduce speed roadworks area there are always coppers sitting there with a radar. Esp on Thur / Fri / Sat nights... pricks.

If the roads are dead, I usually crawl through at 10k's and try and find the bastards.

Seems a fair cop on that road at that point.

For others, Anzac Parade which I mentioned is bottom centre of the picture. You can see it has a broad divided centre (orange), a band of trees to each side and minor roads servicing the houses behind the trees. There are no driveways onto the Parade. There is one cross street about a third of the way down. From that cross street to Consititution Avenue (out of picture below) it is very difficult to keep your speed to 60, and absolutely no reason to do so except that they like to pop a radar or camera at the end of it

The Google picture looks a few years old.

they are pretty old, pre-2003. a few of the motorways weren't completely built in these maps.

Reading the paper this morning, I noticed the following from Peter Beattie, Queensland Premier:

quote:

They [speed cameras] are not revenue-raisers. [They] had been credited with cutting the State's road toll from more than 500 a year to 279 in 1998 when the cameras were introduced, although the toll for 2005 so far had reached 324

I wonder if someone could explain that to me? (whoops, I think my irony meter just blew). To help, here is a graph of traffic accident deaths in Queensland from 1994 to 2005 (to date)

Beattie

To be fair, on a population-adjusted basis the situation is better, with a slight declining trend (worse this year) since 1998 but I wonder what it is they were doing right before 1998 that has been abandoned since?

Any chance the drop happened to coincide with anti drink driving laws and advertising campaigns?

Actually, the last post is a digression from the topic I first had in mind. I was interested to read this Victorian study into the efficacy of graduated demerit points:
http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/rsc/DEMERIT/demerit2.htm#1

The conclusion some of you will like to see is that graded demerit points are a poor indicator of accident potential, with the possible inference that double-demerits are a wank. Average accident rates over christmas periods have been completely consistent with non-christmas accident rates for years. There is no unusual carnage, just a lack of other news.

What you may be less pleased to read, especially those of you who have accumulated sufficient points to suffer licence suspensions, is that traffic offence rate is a very good indicator of accident potential.

quote:

Even the simplest method, using only total convictions, predicted 50% more high-accident-potential drivers than the [Canadian demerit point] system

. So, demerit points may suck but repeated offences indicate something dangerous about your driving.

I think that is highly likely Pen. The major factors I have seen credited with actual reductions of deaths and injuries (I mean from studies, not politician stuff) are
  • seat belts
  • improved roads
  • reduction in drink driving
  • improved cars

Changing the Hume Highway to divided road from Sydney to Canberra virtually eliminated deaths on that road. Our current death rates over all are about a twentieth of the rates thirty years ago, after adjustment for population.

Shane, you get your points back on the 3rd anniversary of the offense. I get 3 points back in Feb this year for not coming to a complete stop long enough at a stop sign. I think the biker cop had his tights crammed up his bum cheeks too tight.
