The short version is: it turns out I had only blown the back turbo, the front one is fine. I bought a pair of CT12a's off SC from a bloke in Melbourne - when I opened the package, one had no seal at all and the other was in a million bits at the bottom of the box. My mechanic then sold me a turbo he had "laying around" which boosts just fine but apparently has a leaky seal and p*isses out smoke when idling. He now won't answer my emails.
I'm kind of lost now because a) I can't afford steel wheels ($2-3k) b) I can't afford to get the leaky turbo rebuilt ($1-2k) c) I can't afford a single turbo conversion ($3-4k)
If I buy a turbo from a wrecker I'm looking at $400-500 just for one, but at least I'd get a 3 month warranty. So if no one round these parts has a spare one I'm just gonna have to do that.

Im purchasing a 1JZ Engine to work on sam which will have turbos if you want them, BUT, the engine wont be arriving for a few weeks. Check on ebay for 1JZ turbos as they do pop up quite often.

Sam, how long can you live with the leaking turbo?
Mine will be coming off in roughly 2 months. At least you know what condition they are in, they don't leak and they don't blow any white smoke. They have been run with a catch can for the whole time I've had it (which helps prevent failure).
Might save you buying something that you don't know the condition of again.

Thanks heaps everyone. Brockas I'd love to buy your turbos but I don't think I can put up with the reeking burnt oil smell and embarrassment until September. Plus...I've seen the way you drive O_o Hehe...only joking.
Shane may be able to help me out with a mate of his, but my insurance is due for renewal soon so I've gotta pay for THAT first

I was with HBF for 6 years before I bought the Soarer, I had a 60% no claim bonus and was paying like $440 per year for fully comprehensive. Then when I got [YES MAM] HBF were the first people I called, and I was quoted $2750 per year. Sif.
Just Car was the best deal I found - $1004 per year, fully comprehensive, although you have to pay it all either upfront or biannually. I have enough monthly bills to contend with - I don't want another!
Yeah... I had Just Car from start, paid 1070 year ago, now I got HBF, 950 or something, and I can pay it monthly too. It's got something to do with me turning 25, so your quote might come down heaps too Sam, even more so if you combine home and contents with them. At least you won't have to pay all upfront. I've heard Just Car is sh|t with claims and stuff too so...

I have to say, I didn't have any trouble with Just Cars when I had to make my claim for the 'garage incident'. True, the repairer ended up taking a while, although that was mainly due to the problems with getting a good door trim.
