"I LIKE CONES" AWARD - Dan C.

Haha, yeah I liked those cones!!!

I still haven't got the times with me, haven't got them from my cuz yet, hopefully will get them today. And I gotta convert the video footage too, bloody batttery didn't last long grrrr. Got the footage of the first two courses, not everyone got filmed unfortunately, oh, and the guy also filmed the sprinters drifting action too, so not entirely all soarers on it oh well. Looks good though... give me a couple of days and I'll post it up somewhere.

Guys a HUGE pat on the back for organising and attending. These kind of track days where you can have fun, learn about the car and how to handle it in a safe and legal environment are to be encouraged.

I was actually surprised by The V8's there as I drove one before my TT as I was originally looking for a V8 but the one I drove was really sluggish.
Then I drove my TT-- Game Over.

The V8's usually do pretty OK on the track actually, check Juzza and Peter Scott's results sometime.

Great pics!!!

I'm fighting Alfred for "most smoke in a pic" award haha

Doesn't surprise me that a V8 took out the fastest time. I was chatting to a few guys there, the V8's are definitely more suited to the tighter tracks, the power delivery of the TT's means the power comes on that fraction later than you want it to, and when it does come on it comes on a little too hard, hence the traction issues. Even worse for Shane with the big single. On a longer, less twisty track, the TT's would have the advantage.

I'm not surprised about V8s doing so well as it's not exactly about outright power here is it. The 450hp didn't exactly help the GTR or the sileighty timewise (apart from cool out of control moments haha). I think those 'underpowered-in-comparison' sprinters did very well for time too, just drifted most of the time which looked pretty cool!

Was an awesome day, wanna do it again!!! This time something more crazy, like learning how to do a 360 deg turn at 100km/h :-)

Good thing noone took a pic of me from the back while on WOT, I saw on the video footage how much smoke my car blows, it's scary haha! I could easily win that award (for all the wrong reasons haha). Should get a custom license plate 'SMOKIN' or something like that

I've noticed today I must have span out too many times as my wheel alignment and balancing is stuffed! I got flatspots on my tyres too

Yep spot on, Kim "Mr Hat" was saying the other course they often do is a fast zigzag one without any really slow/tight turns where the TTs would get off boost, i think we'd see the difference there.

That would be a good one to run next time.

Dan - Good point about the GTR, was it just me or was that thing more boatlike than any Soarer there? Just looked very soft in the suspension?? (for a GTR)

Yeah I wasn't *that* impressed by the GTR. But it probably had potential.
I guess first course was probably a TT course, second course was a V8 one and the last one was probably fairly even between both.

Yeah, I'm not sure what a GTR suspension is meant to be like, but Chris (GTR owner) wasn't impressed about his suspension either... I guess he could mod that too (was a stock suspension as far as I know). Then again his car does weigh two tons...

Dan chuck the flatspotted ones on teh back, at least you wont feel it through the steering then.

I flatspotted a tyre on the Escort i had (bit of excessive handbrake use ) drove around on it for ages before it pissed me off and i got a new tyre

Well, I reckon all four tyres have flat spots, I mean the car had all wheels locked up, not just the front ones, changing the tyres around wouldn't make a slightest difference. That doesn't bother me as much as the wheel shakes and crappy alignment I'm getting now, gotta pop into Bob Jane to get that fixed when I get a chance

Except you should never put your worst tyres on the rear. Losing control of the rear end is a lot more of a problem usually than the front pushing a bit.

You all should have noticed that on the day.

You rarely lose control from the front not gripping, the car just pushes, but even in a worst case scenario it should stay straight. Usually if you just turn the wheel a bit further it will actually turn OK, though it takes a bit of guts to do it as your initial reaction is "Bother, the front is starting to slip a bit, I better not do anything to upset the apples".

Incidentally, that should be on your To-Do list next track day. Find a nice safe slow-ish tight corner - the longer the better, and go in just a bit faster than normal so you feel the front starting to push, then turn the wheel further. Even if you have lost 20% of grip, you still have 80% left, so turning the wheel further will pull the nose around to where you want it to go.

Do NOT try this on a public road in case it doesn't behave as advertised or you lose the rear instead.

Yeah haha, I tried to do fast and sharp turns a few times, not a good idea, the car just skidded straight and had to let go of the turning sharp bit a little to maintain control... Best thing to do was to slam on the brakes to shift the weight before turning, then just let it roll and turn without power or brakes and it was alright, then just floor it towards the end, nice and clean... learnt quite a few useful things there I must admit.
