I took this out of the window while flying down to Melbourne this evening (my phone has a safe "flight mode"). It was remarkable to see the way the smoke climbed up and hung like a dark mist among the cumulus clouds, so that the clouds looked like white icebergs.

We were on the western edge of the fires, with the wind blowing east. You could see the smoke rising from the front on the ground although the flames themselves were not visible at that height, and nor have I shown that front in this photo of course.
