Hi all. MIght be of interest to some - that bane of modern life, the iPod battery. I had a win - instead of paying Apple $150 to put a new battery in my 18 month old iPod, I bought a new one on the net and installed it myself. It was very easy - everything just plugs in, and the new one is a higher capacity battery as well. Cost $65. Muz

David, I bought my battery at www.circuitcentral.com.au . They include little tools to separate the top and bottom of the case, but i found a penknife on a corner the best to get started. A little fiddly, but take your time, gentle persistence wins the day. The top and bottom of the case are only held together by a series of plastic clips. The battery comes with instructions on installation. Once you get the case open its a piece of piss. Peter, I can't imagine Fanta would get inside the case unless you submerged your iPod in a bucket of Fanta.

Thanks Murray. I have ordered one from www.streetwise.com.au because I needed it for a 2G.
My ever-helpful son proposes that I open the case by dropping it from a height of 1.5 metres onto a hard floor. Apparently, one of his friends accidentally did that and it sprang open but when put back together worked perfectly. Hmm

It's sitting in my drawer at work.. hasn't been pulled apart or anything. the only things wrong with it are the little ding on the bottom corner, and when you turn it on it displays a picture of a frown. I was going to pull it apart and see if something's just jiggled loose, though my first though was it was probably a busted drive.
50 bucks plus post and it's all yours. I believe after you pull that part out, the screen will probably be worth 50 on eBay.

It's a 6 months old 60Gig photo Ipod. I don't know what software it runs.
Can you upgrade the software in them? That WOULD be nice. Please tell.
It holds charge for about 8 hours continuous play. It also seems to happen when it's at the end of the charge. It takes it about 2 days to get rid of the rest of the charge.
They talk about the symptoms you describe and how to update iPod from Windows. Having a Mac [adopts suitably smug look for the occasion] I get these updates automatically when software update runs for OS X.

Yes Miles, more than one in the family. Mine is a 17" portable which has done well for me the past couple of years. We have eliminated desktops and buy only portables for the SOHO now. I attribute some of my success over the past ten or fifteen years to the breadth and depth of software available and which I have exploited, and the sheer ease of using multiple products on the platform with minimal effort. Despite the gloomiest predictions from friends over the years, I have never wanted for software power.
