| Hi all, I've been asked by my (new) girlfriend if there is an invaluable tool or gadget or piece of kit that you could have when doing up a car. Her brother's birthday is on the weekend (not much notice I know) and he's doing up an old Daddo (convertible, not sure which one) so she wants to get him something towards that. Budget is around $80. Any ideas? |

| a set of ratchet ring spanners. 10, 12, 13,15mm. What a god send. The flexibility of an open ender on one end and a ratchet on the other. The best bit is you only need 6mm of clearance and 1/8th of a turn to use. Simply marvelous. Cost any where from $50-$80. I got mine on sale at Repco for $30. |

Repco, Supercheap Toolies, Gasweld all have small metric sets (usually 10 - 15mm) which are enough to get into all those fiddly tight spaces. Anything bigger and you usually have enough room to swing a knuckle bar. The superworks gold (supercheap) and the Repco set have a lifetime guarantee for less than $70. |

| SNAP ON RATCHET RING ENDS!!!! or a Warren and Brown 1/2" tension bar. Otherwise, a set of Wurth Plastic lined Mag Wheel Sockets, 4 cans of ROSTOF FREI (makes WD40 look like Araldite), A good nudie calender, Ice Water dispenser/Cold water filter, A 20l drum of Orange hand cleaner, Mechanix Gloves (awesome), or 200L of C16. |

| A T&E speed wrench for $40 would be good too. (after noticing the $80 budget!) |

| I'd say socket set. Don't know what i'd do without mine. Also if he's into electrics get him a wire stripper tool. Whoever made that tool is a genius. |

Yep! Thanks Neil! My bad... was in a little bit of a daze when i wrote that. Thats what 4 weeks off does to the brain!! The Ratchet ring spanners are worth their weight in gold! you have no idea how many times they will become useful!! |

I don't have that problem Pretty much everything on my cars is 3/8, 7/16, 1/2 or 9/16. Another suggestion: torque wrench. |

| We ended up going to Autobahn (after dropping in on the mini fix it day at Pen's) and looked around for a while. She had decided not to go for the ratchet ring spanners as she thought he might already have them. Ended up buying a cordless, rechargeable LED work light. Quite a cool piece of kit actually, though at $179 a bit more than what she originally planned to spend. The guys at Autobahn did give her a $20 discount though. I told her that was because she's got a great rack, which she seemed to like..... Thanks again for the suggestions. And as a matter of interest, he didn't have any ratchet ring spanners.... |
