Hi kids!
Im planning a trip to Tokyo for mid this year and am looking for things which i can do there!
At the moment, im a little short!

I have one of the necessities, visit the Toyota Automobile Museum, however am a little dry in other areas.

Has anyone got any ideas of what i can do? What i can go see? Etc etc!!
I'll be there with a mate and my gf for the majority of the time, with my mate leaving after just under 2 weeks and leaving me with the missus.

I would rather not travel too far from Tokyo as that will start getting a little too pricey.

If anyone has any specific details about where i can read about suggestions etc i would appreciate that as well!

If anyone has any experiences of being in Japan i would love to hear them as well!! =D

Cheeeeeeeeers guyyyysss.

Ben: i bet a few people have that in mind.

Callum: see if you can find out some sessions happening on a race track, you might be lucky enough to see some racing or drifting.

Going some distance from Tokyo is not too hard if you can afford a few bullet train trips. Two of the places we really enjoyed were Matsumoto and Kyoto. Look up what sights are there. We also took a train down to one of the islands, Shikoku I think, across a massive bridge at a great height but that might involve going to Osaka first and that was not very interesting. The fastest bullet train we caught cracked 290km/h but some others pootled along at a mere 160-200. There are faster ones but they cost more. In 2001 you had to buy the concessional train ticket before you left Australia; it was not for sale in Japan.

In some respects you do not really have to look for some special thing to see; just wandering the small residential streets of one of the older small towns will give you bucketloads of interesting sights and cultural differences. Go in to some of the small country shops as well as hitting a super-rich department store.

One place to read about suggestions is at your friendly travel agent where you can probably pick up a useful brochure without committing to anything.

Eating at street stalls and buying cold rice dishes from supermarkets will keep you fit and fed at a reasonable price. Remember to say goodbye to a piece of beef before leaving Australia.

Choose restaurants carefully. Some of those which appear cheap and traditional are cheap and food-free. Probably a good idea to hold off the booze apart from Japanese beer as well, if you are trying to hold down costs.

true.
Callum, if you have had a nice lunch at TAKA's Kitchen in the city, you would have enjoyed a $7.50 - $10 patter of sushi. In Tokyo is about $25USD for the same serving.

See this meal in the attached pic. That cost my mate and I $95USD for all the food in that pic!

Go to Akihabara!!

It's Tokyo's "electronic city" and there is no way you can see everything in one day.. It's like a 10 min train trip away from Shinagawa where we stayed.

Just be careful you don't end up in some of the more adult shops accidentally.. We went to an innocent looking hardware shop, and right up the back was a completely different kind of "hardware" if you catch my drift..

One of the problems im having is that the travel agents i talk to in Perth say they dont have any info on Japan other than the well beaten track stuff (expensive!)

The missus is living in Tokyo atm but she isnt being much help =\

Kyoto is certainly an option.

Try the net for Ryokan (which are usually expensive) and similar traditional accommodation. You should be able to link from there to more information. The ancient Japanese-style castle at Matsumoto is very interesting while there are good hill walks and older suburbs around there, including people in traditional Japanese dress because that is what they wear rather than because they are expecting a tourist bus. Actually, walking there we asked a bloke on a bicycle for directions. He turned out to be Australian and wanted to catch up on the recent AFL final, it being somewhat under-reported in Japan.

Kyoto has a lovely park and shrine, the Golden temple and Geisha amongst its other claims to fame. You will see Geisha in the early evening in the right areas of town. Kyoto is definitely recommended (and I hope you like walking). We happened upon a Shinto wedding and one of the priests (or whatever they are titled) took time out to explain the ceremony to us.

I have said before that Japan is one of the places I would love to visit again; particularly now that the exchange rate is about twice as good as it was when we were there

Luke: Funny you should mention that. because is you see a kitschy hotel - strobes, flashing lights and huge signs - that looks affordable your probably looking at a " love hotel ". For couples staying a short while, usually 3 or 4 hours.

Callum, Ive stil got all my Tokyo train and subway guides etc from my visit.
I stayed at Hotel Edoya in Tokyo. 85Yen a nite including breakfast and its a 10min walk to the Yamanote trainline which is the main circular line around Tokyo. Plus its one stop from Akihabara too. Tokyo station and so many other big shopping places are on this Yamanote line

BTW this is Akihabara.

O and get used to the train and subway map. The green circle is the Yamanote line.

And stand behind the yellow lines at the platforms too !
