Highway Patrol are not well liked, even amongst their own. General duties cops are a different matter, they generally have a better attitude.

Last year I got pulled over and given a warning and I hadn't even done anything! Just tootling along at the speed limit like everyone else in my lane and got accused of speeding and weaving. Now thats assholery.

We all know the consequences, so if you do the crime, just fess up and accept the penalty....

I have had my fair share (and unfair share) of fines, the latest was "street racing" back in November last year.

Street racing in NSW carries quite a fine, but as I knew I wasn't actually racing, just watching, I took the fine to court, and asked the prosecution nicely in front of the magistrate to produce hard evidence of me street racing as claimed on the fine, and if they could produce enough proof to convince the magistrate that I was racing, I would accept the fine, the loss of licence, and the impounding of my car without even so much as an ill word, but if they couldn't produce this proof, I demand an appology in writing, the reinstatement of my demerit points, the removal of the fine, and an appology to the magistrate and the public for wasting their time and money.

Needless to say they 'claimed a video' showing my car drifting. I asked at that point "Does this video clearly show me as a driver, and does this video clearly show my car's numberplate (upon saying this I produced exibit A, receipt for a rental vehicle from the day before to the week after and explained to both prosecution and magistrate that my car was tucked up at home on a week's holiday while I had a rental car provided by work, therefore it couldn't have been my vehicle seen in the video)".

After hearing this, my case was dismissed, the prosecution appologised to me, reinstated my demerit points, and appologised to the magistrate.

Funny enough, it was my car at the scene, and the rental was tucked away for the night.

I hadn't drifted, I had gone down with a bunch of friends, parked my car, and was watching the other guys drifting. When the Police came, I moved my car and a friends car into the 2nd level carpark, and walked off for 4 hours (came back and the cops where still parked behind the car, so I calmly waited out of sight in the bushes).

After they left, I got the car and went home.

The guys that where caught where told "we have video footage of all of you hoons 'at it', and we will prosecute you all", to which I spoke to the building owner that the video footage was coming from, and he said the cameras had been turned off for the previous 6 months due to faulty cabling.

The police had no video footage, they lied directly to us to try and sweat us into dobbing each other in. They even told one girl "you know it's a criminal offence to lie in a conversation with the authorities dont you?".

So when they came to sweating me, I gave them back their own line, and that was the end of the discussion other than them telling me "we will review the video footage and mail out infringements accordingly".

Police are just people doing a job. They are the worst mongrels int he world when they catch you doing something illegal and book you or charge you for it, but if someone's breaking your door down at 2am, who is the first people your going to call??? And sadly, they are going to come out and help you even if you dont deserve to be helped.

Have respect for them, if they obviously are doing the wrong thing, then take further action, but if you have dont the crime, take the penalty and move on.

B.
