I do

That is one of the original TTE WRC Group B Celica Turbo rally cars, which makes it very rare and worth going to so much trouble to restore

Multiple WRC champion Juha Kankkunen is in one of the pics, it could well be his

Nice find

but you could just have migrated the build plates onto a less of a basket case.... to suggest that that is now the "original" Celica after the amount of replacement that occurred is a bit like my grandfather's hammer....it's been in the family for 120 years, had seven new shafts and three new heads, but it's Granpa's hammer....get real! This is a result of unreal prices being paid for cars with quite questionable provenance...rant over!

These kind of money-no-object restorations are not that unusual, besides you would need to pull apart the original anyway to duplicate the one-off rally modifications (its not as if there would be any plans or anything else to copy off), so its not any harder and more authentic to just rebuild it

I'd prolly say that even a "less of a basket case" would be completely stripped and rebuilt also.
Ever seen some of the restorations Chip Foose does? ;)

Its not about making _THE_ORIGINAL_ new again, its about restoring the original car back to its former glory.

That was really good. It wouldnt be the same if you migrated teh plates at all. It wouldnt be the car that Kankunnen and Crazy George raced. Kinda like the Winfield R32 GTR.

That build up part where the decals are reproduced from scanned originals reminds me of puttin together my tamiya rally car models!

Well, I'm in the minority.... a bit surprising, 'cos I know I'm a wanker, but I still don't buy the idea that replacing 99% of the shell, chassis, suspension and engine gives you the original car. What's the difference between the build plates being the only bit you don't replace, and migrating the build plates to another shell.... beats me (which reminds me, I'm a wanker!!)

It doesn't give you the original car, but it feels closer to the original than a better quality one to start the restoration with.

Isn't it more of a "because it can be done" type of situation? For the challenge and all that? No, I don't totally understand it either, but I'd guess thats why.

Those bits not inc the chassis, but possibly motors as well, would no doubt have been replaced many times over during its racing career and I'm sure they would still have felt as though they were driving the same car. But I did enjoy the fact they salvaged as much as they could (like recoing the gauges etc).
I would have taken one look and assumed it was too far gone and could not be restored. But I would always be paranoid a little flicker of rust was gnawing away deep inside the car somewhere if it were mine haha.

If you look at some of the of rust that concourse builders buy, youd think they were nuts for forking out teh thousands they do for rusted up american junk. But, they do...
