I have seen a Lexus GS300 for sale and it currently has 240000 kms. That is fairly high and would normally be frowned upon. Would it be wrong to buy it? What are the possible side effects of a car having done that much distance (besides general wear & tear)? What are the 2JZ's like at this stage of their life? What is their life expectancy? Some many question.

the possiblity of worn rings can be an issue....if so, you'd have to think of putting some penrite 30w/70w and replacing rings aint cheap (labour wise... )

What is the asking price?
Have you compared to others on the market?

The asking price is about $15900 for a private and about $16900 for a dealer car. Others on the market fluctuate between $17000 - $23000+ depending on kilometers and age.

Will, get an IS300, it's lighter and will go faster :-) Novate it and it'll cost you sweet FA...

What year is that GS? Is it in a good overall condition? I'd say most Lexuses have had an easy life and wouldn't have been thrashed like a 2J Supra would for example. But if there is a grand difference between a high kay example and average kay example I'd pay that extra, assuming all else is equal. Or perhaps get them to drop the price even further...

Daniel purely because I can only spend what I sell the car for. A IS300 is going to cost outside of my ball park figure. Additionally, novating won't help as the cash I will get paid with goes into the house loan (and no I'm not borrowing against the house).

Oh and forgot to mention that the car I am looking at is as follows:

98 GS300 (JZS160)
Owned by an old gentleman
Bought from Lexus (Chatswood)
Serviced (with full log books & serviced every 10000k's) by Lexus (Chatswood).
The guy that sold it has bought one of the new Lexus GS450/460's.

Roughly the car has done about 28000km's every year.

Sounds like the guy took care of it well, are there any major faults/repairs listed in the log book and receipts?

Novating has got nothing to do with your house loan. Employer pays the lease out of your salary with before tax dollars... Generally novated lease is heaps better than borrowing that money against your house... there was a thread a few months ago where I explained how it all works :-)
