What I was trying to say is that when you see thugs trying to shoot just one person, they end up hitting other people up the block instead. I worded it wrong saying that MOST people fallen are at the wrong place at the wrong time, but it happens frequently in Los Angeles, or any other city where gun violence thrives: shootings in which instead of the target getting killed you see some 9 year old kid as the victim. Murder is murder, police don't bother separating it from accidental targets and actual targets, you kill someone, the police will put it as homicide regardless IF the guy shot the wrong person or not; you were still out to kill someone, just the wrong person. Cops don't say "oh, you killed the wrong guy? OK ... lets see here .. accidental targets in shootings ..." You're right about how if a guy wanted to kill, he'd do it regardless with a gun or not, but if he used a knife instead of a gun, then one person would be hurt/killed, instead of other people who would have been unintentional targets.

Jeff I never said I was a gun fan. In fact I am in favour of gun control to a certain extent. The fact is most of society is too damn stupid to be in control of a car/knife/credit card, let alone a gun. I'm definitely not lining up to join the NRA. Those guys are crazy. I can not think of one good reason why assault weapons etc should be legal.

However I do believe that gun control doesn't cure the problem. The problem is stupid people who want to kill other people. While we blame guns and think that taking them out of people's hands has solved the problem, we might be missing something. What I'm saying is we need to see if the loss of guns has lowered the homicide rate, and to what degree. Does having a gun raise the likelihood or severity of criminal activity? If so, lock up the guns. But keep going. I am in favour of almost anything that makes society safer. I hate violence of all kinds. But I want to see the job done properly instead of some politician with an easy knee jerk fix saying "vote for me, I solved the crime problem, I locked up those nasty guns".

"The Road Toll" is another one of my pet subjects. The government engage in constant shock tactics and scare campaigns, and then tell us they are doing something about this hideous menace that will surely kill all of us if not for the blessed speed cameras. I don't buy it. There are far more important things we should be worrying about, but they are harder and less profitable to address. So they don't get ads on tv.

I don't know anyone here or in the US who has been a victim of gun crime. Do you? I know of only a few who have been victims of the road toll. These two things are hardly my greatest fears, yet they make the news all the time.

As David said, the stats may well prove that removing guns DOES HELP. If so, good!! Don't think that I am siding with the gun lobby here. I just want to see the real situation. Does gun control help? There are assumptions and false truths on both sides, and in this case I guess I had to play devil's advocate to continue saying "no, the real stats please". I am not convinced that either side has it right and is solving any problem at all!

Whilst this statement is correct, its not accurate to say that these types of people are the sole cause.

If you were able to enforce gun control as well as remove these people however, what a difference!

How many homicides have you heard about that was done with a licensed owner and gun? What I know is that all shootings are made by unlicensed guns and criminals behind them.

It would be silly to say 'all' shootings are like that.
A large number (not percentage!) would be accidental as well. Kids playing with guns, hunters getting anxious etc.
Would Police shooting criminals (legally of course) be considered another contributor to the figure?
How about the crazed spouse who catches their significant other in bed with someone else?

Whilst a large percentage would probably come from gang type or similar style shooting with illegal firearms (ie, not licensed), the total number of shootings wouldnt be looking to these for all of the contribution to the figure.

Don't assume anything regarding gangs etc.

Why would shootings be any different from any other method of killing? Most homicides are just people who have known the other for a long time, with the classic motives. Money. Sex. Adultery. Jealousy. Revenge.

I think there is a lot of assuming going on here, Miles.
Heh.
