Pffff, just download a normal codec movie then, most movies are of a divx variety anyway...Out of 1000 or so movies I came across, only one requered me to install FFDShow, I wouldn't be concerned about it too much. Besides, as you would know by now, I hate proprietary sh|t with a passion (eg. iPod)
Oh, haven't had a chance to check if it does work though.

The compression method has nothing to do with it being high definition or not, though many codec's max out before they reach hd requirements. High definition is a measure of resolution. DivX is just as capable of delivering a High Definition movie as Quicktime is, though depending on encoding settings, DivX will usually deliver a much smaller file thats more lossy.

Myth TV is good but requires alot of setting up. If you want a good media player i recommend using Xbox Media Center on the Original Xbox. You will require the following.
-An original Xbox modified (either via a modchip or via a softmod).
-XBMC
-Optional Hard drive.
I use this for my video distribution personally and for my clients. Its the cheapest and most reliable solution.
Otherwise there are a few other hard drive based media players out there. The appleTV was recently hacked to play divx & xvid files so you might want to look into that solution if you like something thats small/portable.
As for your wireless solution look into purchasing a wireless bridge. linksys makes a great one that i strongly recommend. The model number is WET54G.

Wouldn't say it's that much these days. It's more about buying the correct gear. (talking remotes and cards).
It's not a bolt on solution, but a more flexible one. The ability to bring up a web page to schedule programing. Rip DVD's/Music, Burn TV shows to dvd. Myth2Ipod etc.
The setup is pretty straight forward and there is a lot of guides and information these days

i must admit it is a great DVR but regardless no matter how much you pretty it up a computer in your living room is ugly.
If you hide the mythTV in a rack somewhere and route the video signal to your panel and have an IR receiver put up in the room then yeah i'd probably go for it then but its alot of hassle getting that running.
On another note if you guys are interested my company distributes a home automation product named control4 which also does some audio distribution.

Actually you could hide a remote front end in your living room, run it off wireless and bob's your uncle. Fortunately it's all open source, which means you are only limited by your imagination
Even still, the case design for HTPC's these days has come a long way. Actually not to hard to find something that most would mistake as a DVD player.
