I'm in the market for a 4WD wagon to lease shortly and I'm still undecided about which vehical to get, so I decided to take a LandRover Discovery 3 with a 2.7L turbo diesel V6 and a RangeRover Sport with a 3.6L twin turbo V8. Both of these are awesome 4WD and very comfortable, both drive like cars on rails, the salesman took a corner recommended at 40 at 110 with confidence and very little body roll and both had plenty of power especially the RangeRover, it also sounds very sweet from outside! Anybody else test driven a 4WD lately?

the panel shop u used to work for did alot of landrover work, so i drove quite a few new ones, i wasnt all that impressed by the disco 3, but i was buy the rangerover, plenty of power stops nice too, although driving along at 70 and flick the steering wheel an you get a speed wobble that wont stop... haha... the new nissan patrols are nice too, so are the BMW X5 and porche cayenne... oooh yeah

They are gay (Cayenne). Look like a blob of snott on the outside and are no nicer to social opinion of you. If you are after a 4wd WAGON go with a Stagea. Otherwise check out a luxo Kluger. They are hawt. Cant go wrong with a Landy though. Stick to the Discovery as they are more of a workhorse and better offroad than a Rangey Sport. Plus the interior of a Sport is pretty poor as far as "luxury sports" cars go.

My other car is a disco. Ownd it for a few years now, kinda know all its quirks (as with any car) but all in all its a brilliant vehicle. This is because in every aspect it "feels" like a real 4wd - not some plastic fantastic hunk of suburban crap. (Bear in mind mine is not the current model - and a manual petrol v8) Pros: Will tow anything anywhere. Straight out - no problem - no questions asked. I also use to own a highly moddified honda prelude (*cough-i know-cough*) now i only needed to tow it a short distance (less that 2-3kms) but the disco did it without even breaking a sweat. Does anything you ask. Up a hill over that tree? No worries. Its insane. Lets face it - its big. If you put the seats down (they fold/cascade right the way up to the drivers seats) you can fit just about anything in there. Vision, unlike most 4wd's you will notice the low lying passenger windows on the disco. great all round vision. Plus the fact that your high - you'll see over most cars and see whats ahead. Hard as nails. Ive thrashed the out of it 4wd'ing and it hardly gets serviced. Still, she goes on like a trooper. The thing sits in my garage week in week out, hop in - start her up - she's fine. No oil? Use urine. Cant kill the bitch. The diesel (mate owns one) its unbelieveably economical on fuel. Dont know why - just is. Cons: The petrol station will be your best friend. The old girl chews more fuel than my TT. In my manual.. the gearbox is just.. well.. big. Feels like im driving a truck. She isnt exactly fast. But thats not what you buy a 4wd for. Now - the biggest point. Parts are bloody expencive and suprise suprise - not always in stock. As such they have to sit on a plane all the way from the UK/Germany or whereever they are building the cars these days. My heater went in my car; quote? - just under two grand. No thanks, ill wear a jumper. Look, i bloody love the car. Would i buy another one? No. But thats because i wouldnt buy another 4wd. (I barely use it every forghtnight as it is). But would i buy one over any other 4wd? Absolutely.

My parents have one of the older Discoverys (manual v8 as above). A couple of times a week it tows a two tonne load of water about 25kms, and since they've had it has done about 60,000kms in a couple of years. The only problem they've had with it is when they had a strange rattle that sounded like something nasty coming from the gearbox, turned out to be a loose flange on the exhaust. The few times I've driven it, it felt very stable on the road, very little body roll at speed on corners, and the motor felt strong. They have it on gas, it costs them about $70 to drive from their house to mine (around 650km). That said, my brother used to sell 4wd vehicles, and regularly had them as drive cars, and the one that I was most impressed by was the Landcruiser Prado. That thing was awesome, grunty yet comfortable, and having seen video of what one of these things will do straight out of the showroom in hard terrain, very impressive. Drove a Kluger, didn't think much of it, it felt like a suburban vehicle, not very spacious inside, not very high either so not real good for extra visibility.

Top gear diss the hell out of Landrover for their very poor reliability records. A guy I sometimes work with at Canon had a (new) Discovery but ended up getting a refund on it and buying a Prado after continuing problems with the transmission. He's very happy with the Toyota.

I thought Top Gear said it was one of the best 4wd's they had ever driven? And then they proved it by driving it up a mountain in the scottish highlands.

No idea about that, haven't seen that episode - just going off Jeremy Carkson's comments on other cars saying things like "even less reliable than a landrover" - "lower customer satisfaction than a landrover", etc, basically using it as a benchmark for crap build quality.

Ha. Ive heard that Aston Martins mainly have a two year waiting list because every time someone orders one the company goes bankrupt and they have to wait until its bailed out...then they go to the end of the waiting list again.
